Aretha Franklin – Take a Look: Complete on Columbia (11CD+DVD)

null

Take a Look demonstrates how Aretha was born the “Queen of Soul,” paying loving care and attention to every facet of her years at Columbia.

The package includes CDs of Aretha’s seven full-length albums for Columbia; two CDs reflecting her collaborations with producers Bobby Scott (in 1963) and Clyde Otis (in 1964); and a bonus CD of singles produced by Bob Johnston and rarities that were “sweetened” and released after Aretha left the label. The set will also includes a DVD featuring Aretha, at the piano, performing several songs on The Steve Allen Show in 1964.

Among the highlights of Take a Look is a previously unreleased version of Yeah!!! In Person With Her Quartet which strips away the artificial club ambience that was added to the album’s studio performances, revealing Aretha at the peak of her powers. Another high point is an unreleased album called A Bit of Soul. Though it contains previously released material, the original album is presented here for the first time in its master form. Other revelations include riveting studio conversation between Aretha, John Hammond and pianist Ray Bryant during the making of Aretha’s debut album in the summer of 1960.

The set’s producer, Leo Sacks, says: “The stunning performances on Take a Look demonstrate how Aretha Franklin paved the path to her own greatness. Here is the young Aretha planting the seedlings that would blossom a short time later at Atlantic Records. From standards to show tunes to bebop to blues, Take a Look captures a gritty soul about to take flight.”

Notable features on “Greater Than One” are provided by Monica Blair, LaLa Hathaway, Black Milk and J Tait. W.omen (W.W.W) to gain some international inspiration. What resulted was a singular, limited edition project and a precursor to “Greater Than One” which fans will have to see to hear. Grover Washington Jr – A Secret Place

null

A Secret Place was produced by Creed Taylor and issued on his Kudu imprint, while the versatile David Matthews arranged the horn section. This lineup may not be surprising, but the scope of the recording is. Washington could have gone the easy route and followed up his R&B chart success with a series of uptempo, rousing tracks that leaned heavier on funk–in the style of the title tracks of both his previous albums, 1974′s Mister Magic and 1975′s Feel So Good. But he went in a different direction, at least partially. The bottom line on A Secret Place is that while the set did well commercially, it got nowhere near the critical praise of its predecessors. That’s a shame, because it is a truly fine album whose grooves and pleasures stand the test of time easily.(cduniverse)

Personnel: Grover Washington, Jr. (saxophone, soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Eric Gale , Steve Khan (guitar); Gerry Niewood (saxophone, alto saxophone); John Gatchell, Randy Brecker (trumpet); Dave Grusin (piano); Anthony Jackson (bass instrument); Harvey Mason, Sr. (drums); Ralph MacDonald (percussion).

Hubert Laws – Morning Star

null

Flutist Hubert Laws is joined by a large string orchestra on this set, which was arranged and conducted by Don Sebesky. Keyboardist Bob James is in the supporting cast, and some unnecessary background vocalists (including Debra and Eloise Laws) are employed on some of the numbers, but the focus is mostly on Laws’ brilliant and appealing flute. Highlights include “Let Her Go,” “Where Is the Love,” and, particularly, “Amazing Grace.” The results are pleasing, if not quite essential.

Personnel: Hubert Laws (flute, alto flute, piccolo); Debra Laws, Eloise Laws, Lani Groves, Tasha Thomas (vocals); John Tropea (guitar); Gloria Agostini (harp); Elliot Rosoff, David Nadien, Gene Orloff, Irving Spice, Harry Cykman, Max Ellen, Paul Gershman, Emanuel Green, Harry Lookofsky (violin); Lucien Schmit, George Koutzen, Charles McCracken (cello); Romeo Penque (flute, alto flute, piccolo, English horn); Phil Bodner (flute, alto flute, clarinet); Jack Knitzer (bassoon); Alan Rubin, Marvin Stamm (trumpet, flugelhorn); James Buffington (French horn); Garnett Brown (trombone); Bob James (electric piano); Dave Friedman (vibraphone, percussion); Billy Cobham (drums); Ralph MacDonald (percussion)

Anthony Valadez – Just Visiting

null

Anthony Valadez grew up in the bustling cultural hub of the San Fernando Valley, right outside of Los Angeles. By junior high, young Anthony was tuning into KCRW where he was particularly drawn to a show where Michael Mixxin Moor was combining political speeches by the like of Malcolm X with acid jazz instrumentals. By the mid-2000’s Anthony was becoming a staple of the musical scene in Los Angeles with regular gigs at the Temple Bar and an eclectic radio show at California State University Northridge where his guests were up and coming stars like Sa-Ra, Blu, Exile and Aloe Blacc.

When he was living in an apartment complex with Flying Lotus as his neighbor, an organic collaborative environment led to the budding young Brainfeeder-to-be to give a bit of insight into what turned out to be Anthony Valadez’ first release, “Go!” a 7” released by Recordbreakin’ in 2006. Always ambitious, Anthony was not satisfied with just looping and triggering sounds. Eventually, he sought to collaborate with real musicians and produce in the fullest sense of the word. This was the genesis of Just Visiting, his debut album on Plug Research. Over the course of the past three years, Anthony has collaborated with musicians, from other continents, other cities and other area codes of Los Angeles, to create an album that is as diverse as any of his radio shows. Sometimes musicians would come over to his apartment after gigs, record and crash on his couch. Other times he’d be getting Pro Tools files sent over from Amsterdam that he would then arrange and chop-up on his MPC. “I feel like each song is different but the common denominator is that it has soul,” explains Anthony. “I feel like this is a soul record in so many different directions, from soul jazz to weirdo soul.”

Aretha Franklin – I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You

null

After the end of Aretha Franklin’s five year stint on Columbia Records (who tried marketing her as a jazz vocalist), she signed on with Atlantic Records. Produced by music biz veteran Jerry Wexler, Franklin’s Atlantic debut found her flexing creative muscle and making music that forever altered the course of pop and soul. Accompanying herself on piano throughout, Franklin’s powerful and passionate vocals garnered comparisons to Ray Charles, while her blend of R&B, gospel and jazz rightfully earned her the moniker “Queen Of Soul.” (cduniverse)

Personnel: Aretha Franklin (vocals, piano); Chips Moman, Jimmy Johnson (guitar); King Curtis, Charlie Chalmers (tenor saxophone); Willie Bridges (bass saxophone); Melvin Lastie (trumpet, cornet); Dewey “Spooner” Oldham (keyboards); Tommy Cogbill (bass); Gene Chrisman, Roger Hawkins (drums); Carolyn Franklin (background vocals).

Hawthorne Headhunters – Myriad of Now

null

In search of some new, Black Spade migrated out west to soak up the vibrant Southern California vibes and promptly met producer Proh Mic at the famed Do-Over. The two hit it off and began toying with music, soon bringing I,Ced, another St. Louis expat in LA, into the fold. The collective was taking shape and drew their moniker from ‘Ced’s residence in Hawthorne, California. The St. Louis natives reached out to their old comrade Coultrain and he eventually moved out to LA as well. A jam session at the HVW8 Gallery solidified the group’s identity and the creative relationship with it’s owner resulted in an eponymous EP in 2009. Made up of songs done with no intention of release, the EP was the first physical manifestation of Hawthorne Headhunters on HVW8 Records in 2009.

The creative process of the newly formed group was very natural. Members of the group liken the approach to that of old Jazz musicians; organic and instinctual, drawing from whatever influences they were feeling and writing about whatever was on their mind. ; They began plotting a full length record, but Proh Mic and Ced decided to pursue solo endeavors instead of focusing on the group and ‘Train and Spade became the official torch-bearers of Hawthorne Headhunters. The duo went in the studio and Myriad of Now was recorded, a 14-track collection of Funk, Electro, R and more that speaks on spirituality, sexuality and everything in between. Carrying on the lineage of Black music dating back to the Blues and the inception of Jazz, Hawthorne Headhunters melt influences together to break new ground.

Lee Fields & The Expressions – Faithful Man

null

There aren’t too many artists making soul music today who had a release in 1969, back when R&B was first beginning to give the drummer some. Lee Fields, however, is one such artist—or maybe he’s better labeled a phenomenon. With a catalogue that ranges from James Brown-style funk to lo-fi blues to contemporary Southern soul to collaborations with French house DJ/producer Martin Solveig, Lee Fields has done it all. Today, with The Expressions—Truth & Soul’s house band, Lee Fields continues to evolve, enmeshed into the group’s sweeping, string-laden, cinematic soul sound.

While drawing comparisons to groups like The Moments, The Delfonics, The Stylistics, and—of course—James Brown, My World has been able to create a space of it’s own due to the group’s desire to interpret and further the formulas of good soul music rather then parrot and imitate them. Chalk that up to Truth & Soul producers and co-owners Jeff Silverman and Leon Michels, as well as the high level of musicianship of everyone involved. These are the same individuals that wrote, produced, and played on Aloe Blacc’s global smash hit LP Good Things for Stones Throw Records, and have provided the back drop for records by El Michels Affair, Adele, Liam Bailey, Ghostface Killah, and Jay-Z to name a few.
“In a curious case of musical evolution, the older Fields becomes, the closer he gets to perfecting the sound of soul that he grew up with as a young man, ” so said music writer, scholar, and DJ Oliver Wang about Fields in a piece for NPR in July 2009. The latest LP from Lee Fields and The Expressions, titled Faithful Man, is the next step towards this perfection. A step that may find Fields, The Expressions, and Truth & Soul as a label, finally being bestowed the contemporary soul music crown.
