Yusef Lateef – Jazz Mood

Yusef Lateef is an American jazz multi-instrumentalist. Although Lateef’s main instruments are the tenor saxophone and flute, he is known for his innovative blending of jazz with ‘Eastern’ music. In addition to the oboe and bassoon, both rare in jazz, Lateef plays various world music instruments, notably the bamboo flute, shanai, shofar, arghul, sarewa, and koto.

Jazz Mood has Lateef going further East, to the Orient, and playing not just tenor and flute but the argol which is a little reminiscent of the oboe. Lateef is joined by Lawson, Farrow, trombonist Curtis Fuller and drummer Louis Hayes. The program includes the haunting “Metaphor,” the exotic “Morning” and a piece in 7/4 time (“The Beginning”) along with a pair of more conventional but no less spirited blues (“Yusef’s Mood” and “Blues in Space”). The music is thoughtful, full of surprises and open to new ideas. Throughout, Yusef Lateef always sounds like a true original and the results are timeless.

The Philadelphia Experiment – The Philadelphia Experiment

In the ’40s, a time-travel experiment allegedly occurred in a Philadelphia naval yard. This fantastic combo of Philly musicians–pianist/keyboardist Uri Caine, bassist Christian McBride, and drummer Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson of the rap combo the Roots–takes its name from that fictional event, and combines fusion, mainstream jazz, and R&B styles from the ’70s to today. Augmented by guitar-legend Pat Martino and trumpeter John Swana, Thompson lays down some tricky jungle beats on the title track, while the threesome venture into the avant-garde on “(Re)moved” and into Latin on “IIe Ife.” The group reincarnates Sun Ra’s “Call for All Demons” as a funky instrumental, and they brilliantly revisit Marvin Gaye’s “Trouble Man,” while Elton John’s “Philadelphia Freedom” is redone as a classical-style McBride/Caine duet. The late saxophonist Grover Washington Jr. was Philly’s patron jazz saint, as evidenced by Caine’s reverent solo piano rendition of Washington’s hit “Mr. Magic” and McBride’s funky, overdubbed one-man electric bass version of “Just the Two of Us.” This threesome reminds us that the City of Brotherly Love still swings.

The Crusaders Albums!

In 1961, four fellows from Houston transplanted themselves to Los Angeles and added more distinctly bluesy elements to the soul jazz style with an ear-grabbing album called The Freedom Sound on the Pacific Jazz label. The band, which had been known in turn as the Swingsters, the Modern Jazz Sextet, and the Nighthawks, was now named the Jazz Crusaders. Its four co-leaders were trombonist Wayne Henderson, tenor saxophonist (and occasional bassist) Wilton Felder, pianist Joe Sample, and drummer Nesbert “Stix” Hooper.

The Jazz Crusaders sound caught on big time, and their subsequent Pacific Jazz albums rewarded them with a good deal of exposure. The band performed regularly and got plenty of airplay. One of its signature pieces, the rollickingly fast “Young Rabbits,” was even used as the musical background for a Ford Mustang TV commercial.

But as times changed, so did the Jazz Crusaders. In the late Sixties, they placed such popular numbers as the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby” and “Get Back” in their repertoire, and firm backbeats began to bolster many a selection. By 1971, they decided that the word “jazz” kept them from attracting a wider listener base, and so they emerged anew with The Crusaders, Vol. 1 (Chisa), an album that openly infused jazz with pop, soul, and r&b elements.

If the Jazz Crusaders had achieved some degree of popularity, it was nothing like the crossover success that greeted the Crusaders. Such albums as Scratch, Southern Comfort, Chain Reaction, Those Southern Knights, Free as the Wind, Images, Street Life, and Royal Jam (recorded variously for the Chisa, ABC Blue Thumb, and MCA labels) sold well and brought in a deluge of new fans. Street Life’s title track provided the Crusaders with a Billboard top forty hit, reaching no. 36 in 1979.

The Crusaders’ popularity started to fade in the early Eighties, prompted by Henderson’s departure. Hooper then left as well, and by the early Nineties Sample and Felder had disbanded the group. A few years later, Henderson and Felder began performing together, first as the New Crusaders and, more recently, as the Jazz Crusaders.

Nicola Conte Albums!

Italian DJ/producer Nicola Conte’s loungey brand of acid jazz relies extensively on bossa nova, but is also heavily influenced by the swinging soundtracks of Italian films in the ’60s and ’70s, plus touches of ethnic music and easy listening kitsch reminiscent of Japan’s Pizzicato Five. Part of the loose-knit Fez collective of artsy acid jazz revivalists centered in the Italian town of Bari, Conte was a classically trained musician who instead moved into production and DJing, working with artists like the Paolo Achenza Trio, the Fez Combo, Balanco, Quintetto X, and the Intensive Jazz Sextet. Conte also masterminded the Schema label, which gave many of those artists a home and cultivated a trademark, distinctly Italian approach to acid jazz. As for his own recording career, Conte scored an underground hit with his first single, “Bossa Per Due,” which appeared on a variety of compilations and was licensed in the U.S. for an Acura commercial. Conte’s first album to be released in America was also titled Bossa Per Due, a slightly reconfigured version of the Italian Jet Sounds; it appeared on Thievery Corporation’s ESL (Eighteenth Street Lounge) label in the summer of 2001. The remix album Jet Sounds Revisited followed in late 2002. Two years later, Conte bowed on Blue Note’s French subsidiary with an assured jazz date, Other Directions. Quiet Stars and a slew of singles followed before Conte would return with Viagem in 2008.

Freddie Hubbard – Hub Cap

On Hub Cap, his third effort as a leader, Freddie Hubbard sticks to the tried-and-true hard bop formula, which is something of a mixed blessing. There’s no question that much of this music is enjoyable, but it’s not quite up to the standards of its two predecessors. Part of the problem is Hubbard’s sextet, which features tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath, trombonist Julian Priester, pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Larry Ridley, and drummer “Philly” Joe Jones. All of the musicians are talented, but only a few are inventive, and that becomes a problem, since it becomes clear that Hubbard is beginning to break free from his influences and develop his own style. In other words, he’s capable of more adventurous music than this straight-ahead hard bop. That said, Hub Cap is a very good hard bop date. There is energy to the performances, and the artist’s vigorous, inspired playing continues to impress, as do some of his original compositions. Only when compared to Hubbard’s first two records, or what would come later, does Hub Cap seem like a lesser effort.

Lee Morgan – The Rumproller

Lee Morgan’s brassy, declarative trumpet playing often gave rise to comparisons with Clifford Brown, but Morgan had a voice of his own, highlighted by a playful, insinuating way with the beat. Those sly, rhythmic inflections may have contributed much to his hit “Sidewinder,” a combination of taut, hard bop and infectious, funky R&B backbeat that has found renewed life in recent years among turntable artists. The Rumproller, written by pianist Andrew Hill, combines the same elements for comparable effect and is held together by the groove developed by Morgan and Billy Higgins, whose sparkling drum work contributed to the success of many Blue Note recordings of the period. The rest of the session is exemplary hard bop, with strong tunes by Morgan and Wayne Shorter and vigorous solos by tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson and pianist Ronnie Matthews, as well as Morgan. The touching ballad “The Lady” features Morgan blowing a muted trumpet and revealing an introspective side that seldom surfaced in his music.

Hank Mobley – Dippin’

With Dippin’, Hank Mobley is clearly entrenched in his “hard” period, as his more muscular, yet still round, tone and his penchant for funky grooves dominate the session. As on many other Mobley sides, Lee Morgan and Billy Higgins return to lend their respective touches, which once started the flame burning with Morgan’s “The Sidewinder.” Pianist Harold Mabern and bassist Larry Ridley round out the group. It is Mobley, however, who blows strongest here, strengthened by a long string of powerful dates like this one.

Like most post-”Sidewinder” Blue Note dates, Dippin’ kicks off with a near-rip-off of the popular Morgan hit from 1963. Here, “The Dip” satisfies the requisite funkiness with a spirited quasi-Latin beat from Higgins and a Horace Silver-esque melody. The following “Recado Bossa Nova,” one of the session’s most memorable cuts, captures the Brazilian style that caused such a stir with equal amounts of taste and bluesy grunge. Later, the date’s only ballad, the classic “I See Your Face Before Me,” offers a respite with one of Mobley’s smokiest performances on record. Finally, the closer “Ballin’” is a joyous waltz that ends the session on a swinging blast.

Ike Quebec – It Might As Well Be Spring

Working with the same quartet that cut Heavy Soul, Ike Quebec recorded another winning hard bop album with It Might As Well Be Spring. In many ways, the record is a companion piece to Heavy Soul. Since the two albums were recorded so close together, it’s not surprising that there a number of stylistic similarities, but there are subtle differences to savor. The main distinction between the two dates is that It Might As Well Be Spring is a relaxed, romantic date comprised of standards. It provides Quebec with ample opportunity to showcase his rich, lyrical ballad style, and he shines throughout the album. Similarly, Roach has a tasteful, understated technique, whether he’s soloing or providing support for Quebec. The pair have a terrific, sympathetic interplay that makes It Might As Well Be Spring a joyous listen.

Joe Henderson – Mirror Mirror

Tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson has had a remarkably consistent career. Although he has spent periods (such as the 1970s) in relative obscurity and others as almost a jazz superstar, Henderson’s style and sound has been relatively unchanged since the 1960s. This lesser-known album finds Henderson in typically fine form in an acoustic quartet with pianist Chick Corea, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Billy Higgins. Carter and Corea contribute two songs apiece, Henderson gets to perform his “Joe’s Bolero” and the tenor sounds majestic on “What’s New.”

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers – Caravan

Yet another fabulous session by Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers from the early ’60s. Caravan was the Messengers’ debut for Riverside during a time when they primarily recorded sessions for Alfred Lion’s Blue Note label. This is the sextet version of the group, with Freddie Hubbard, Curtis Fuller, and Wayne Shorter forming one of the best front lines of all time. As usual, the band is the epitome of classic hard bop, with tight ensemble work, highly advanced arrangements, and powerful solos by all.

The group’s impressive arrangement of Duke Ellington’s “Caravan” opens the set with signature African drum grooves and solos from the leader. Music director Shorter contributes two original selections for the set; his swinging waltz “Sweet ‘N’ Sour” is offered in two takes, and the moving “This is For Albert” is, interestingly enough, a dedication to pianist Bud Powell. One of the group’s strengths, of course, was their treatment of standards, and both “In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning” and “Skylark” receive beautiful readings here. Freddie Hubbard’s classic “Thermo” gets two excellent takes to close the set in true Messengers fashion.

Sam Rivers – Dimensions And Extensions

Multi-instrumentalist Sam Rivers is usually identified with jazz’s avant-garde wing, but many of his albums are highly accessible thanks to his use of hard swing and his well-defined themes. Recorded in 1967,Dimensions And Extensions  is one of Rivers’s finest albums ever. It features a group of simpatico musicians including trombonist Julian Priester (later to play with Herbie Hancock’s Mwandishi band), alto saxophonist James Spaulding, and hard bop (later crossover) expert trumpeter Donald Byrd. While much of this set is cerebral and sometimes challenging, Rivers engages the listener with his fervent soloing on soprano and tenor saxes and flute, as well as with his rhythmic urgency.

Billy Higgins – Bridgework

Billy Higgins was an American jazz drummer. He played mainly free jazz and hard bop.

Higgins played on Ornette Coleman’s first records, beginning in 1958. He then freelanced extensively with hard bop and other post-bop players, including Donald Byrd, Dexter Gordon, Joe Henderson, Milt Jackson, Jackie McLean, Pat Metheny, Hank Mobley, Thelonious Monk, Lee Morgan, David Murray, Art Pepper, Sonny Rollins, Mal Waldron, and Cedar Walton. He was one of the house drummers for Blue Note Records and played on dozens of Blue Note albums of the 60′s. On a whole, he played on over 700 recordings, including recordings of rock and funk.

Randy Weston – African Cookbook

Randy Weston has long been an important and highly original pianist and composer within musicians’ circles. This album, which Randy produced and released himself in limited edition, is among his finest works and has become a valuable collectors’ item among those of us who have known of its existence. The album, especially the composition African Cookbook, is in very heavy debt; to Africa. The melody evokes North Africa and the rhythms come from all over Africa. I knew the rhythms were African, of course, but I didn’t realize how universally African they were until the 1967 tour when Africans in nearly every I country we visited claimed the rhythms in Cookbook as their own, as typical of Ghana or Gabon or Upper Volta or Morocco or wherever. That’s pretty heavy!

Weather Report Albums!

Weather Report was one of the earliest and most influential Jazz-Rock groups. Keyboardist Joe Zawinul and saxophone player Wayne Shorter formed the group in 1971. Both had spent in time in Miles Davis’ group – Shorter played with the legendary 1960s quintet (along with Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams). Zawinul joined later, during the early days when Davis pioneered the fusion movement. Zawinul was one of the early masters of the synthesizer. Before joining Davis’ group, he played electric piano in the Cannonball Adderly quintet. The sound so impressed Davis, that he hired Zawinul and made future keyboard players play the instrument.

In addition to forming the group and composing many of their songs, they were the two constant members in the group, as many musicians passed through. One of the most famous to pass through was bassists Jaco Pastorius. Pastorius was a pioneer on the electric bass. He took it from a rhythm instrument into an important solo instrument by playing with speed and grace, often dazzling audiences with his virtuosity during unaccompanied solos . He created a slippery effect by using a fretless bass. He has influenced countless bass players to this day. He joined Weather Report in 1976 and left in 1982, forming his own group Word of Mouth. Aside from a tremendous ego, he was alcoholic and a heroine addict. He died tragically in 1987 after he instigated a fight at a bar and suffered head injuries.

Unlike many groups, Weather Report focused on a group sound, creating complex arrangements in addition to their improvised solos, which made it more difficult to distinguish between the soloist and accompanists, because they were virtuosos on their instruments, providing awe-inspiring solos, as well as accompaniment work.

The group originally included Miroslav Vitous, percussionist Airto Moreira and drummer Alphonze Mauzon. Their self-titled debut album, as well as their follow-up I sing the Body Electric, are jazz-rock classics. However, their greatest line-up was in the mid 70s when Pastorious and drummer Peter Erskine joined. This line-up put out the fine records Black Market, Mr. Gone, and Heavy Weather, which was their biggest selling album and included their most famous hit Birdland). After Erskine and Pastorious left, they were replaced by Omar Hakim and Victor Bailey, respectively. While they were fine musicians, they lacked the flamboyance and imagination as their predecessors, Their records afterward, were polished, yet detached and lacked the fire of the early works. Shorter and Zawinul disbanded the group in 1987. In 1996, rumors circulated that the Shorter and Zawinul would reunite the group, but it never happened.

While many fusion groups only lasted a few years, Weather Report lasted over fifteen.
