Iswhat?! Albums!

ISWHAT?! started out in 1996 as a renegade hip-hop trio, focusing on live performances, but instead of only saluting rap pioneers, ISWHAT?! connects Hip-hop with free-jazz, rock and soul in a unique way. Based in Cincinnati, Ohio, the band was formed by vocalist/beatboxer Napoleon Maddox, saxophonist Jack Walker, and bassist Matthew Anderson.

North West Metropolis – Expressions EP

null

No more digging in the crates necessary! The well-recieved Expressions EP by North West Metropolis is finally available on CD as well. This first release of North West Metropolis, a collective of producers Perquisite, Omar Rey and Ane features the mc’s Cee Major, Pete Philly and Kain Slim, singer Delicate Swing and saxophonist Bart Sur. Cee Major (the Proov), Pete Philly (ex-Nicotine) and Kain Slim take things up to another level over the sometimes slumbering minimalistic and then again innovating sound of the North West Metropolis beats. The cd release is supported by a video of ‘Self-Reflection’ which features Pete Philly.

The Sound Providers Albums!

The Sound Providers are a Jazz rap duo formed by producers Jason Skills and Soulo. Formed in 1998 in San Diego, California, it originally included a third member, an MC named Profile, who left the group shortly before they were signed by ABB Records. The Sound Providers have produced a number of singles before releasing their debut album An Evening with The Sound Providers, recorded and produced in San Diego and Los Angeles, in 2004 on ABB Records. Without Profile The SP’s filled the void by bringing in a number of guest artists; Asheru, The Procussions, Wee Bee Foolish, Maspyke and Little Brother all made contributions to the album. Soulo, although fulfilling the role of DJ/producer, is known to occasionally spit on the mic. He only raps briefly on the debut, but rapped on a number of their earlier tracks.

In early 2006 they released another album entitled Looking Backwards: 2001 – 1998; which is a compilation of earlier songs made when Profile was still a member of the group. These songs were previously only available as 12″ singles. The album also includes a number of radio promos and other beats and songs which had never seen the light of day before.

In 2006 The SP’s remixed the Kero One track Give Thanks featuring Niamaj. The remix was released as a B-side to Kero One’s In All The Wrong Places single.

Jason now lives in Florida where he teaches advanced web development using Adobe Flash. In 2006 The Pro’s also completed a full length album with an emcee from Tampa, Florida named Surreal. The album is entitled True Indeed and the first single “Just gettin started” b/w “Place to be” was released in June of the same year. The full length album was released on 14 November 2006 on Quarternote/ABB Records.

The Sound Providers sound is predominately jazz orientated hip hop, though their work can consist of a much wider array of genres. Their style is a mix of socially conscious lyrics with new school rap beats, with samples taken from jazz, funk, and reggae. They have cited artists such as Gang Starr and the Native Tongues Posse as influences for their work. For more info check myspace.com/soundproviders.

Starving Artists Crew – Up Pops the Sac

null

The Starving Artists Crew consisted of SP, IQ, Brainstorm, and DJ Phizyx. SP & IQ (Ike) hailing from Metro Detroit and Brainstrom and Phizyx hailing from the greater Flint area. SP and Ike met up in the later 90s and started working toegether. SP ran into Phiz at St. Andrews one friday and gave him a tape he had done called “Beat Poetry”. Phiz liked it and was inducted into the group shortly after. Brainstorm was a later addition to the group right around the time we release our first single entitled “Artistry Original/Four Square VLS”. After that we got crackin on a full length album that was later entitled “Up Pops The SAC” which was released in Japan by PVine/Blues Interactions and domestically by Fatbeats NYC. Shortly after the album was released the SAC did a Japan tour and started recording a second album. About a quarter of the way thru, SP decided to move out to Los Angeles to further pursue his musical endevors and Brainstorm relocated to Yuma Arizona to pursue a career as an english teacher. IQ currently still resides in the Metro Detroit area and is working on a solo joint. Brainstorm is chillin, well, not really. It gets hot as hell down there in southern AZ. Hes befriended some dudes and is always makin music in one way or the other. SP is currently finishing up a solo project to be released in Japan by PVine/Blues Interactions. Where Phiz is atwell, thats a mystery to us still. Peace and love to the boys and everyone back in Detroit MI. Keep on keepin on and who knows, maybe I’ll get off my ass one of these days and release the shit we started recording for the second album.

Brand New Heavies – Heavy Rhyme Experience Vol.1

“Brand New Heavies play the shit that/People used to listen to in ’70s Chevys.” With that succinct and flawless couplet from the awesome opening track, “Bonafide Funk,” Large Professor helped to explain why there was a certain herd of influential rappers who were enthralled by the Brand New Heavies’ sleek (some would say slick) and urbanely stylish Anglo take on classic American funk and soul after the quartet released its eponymous debut in 1991: They were pulling the very same vintage-groove LPs from their crates for inspiration. When the Heavies made their first trip to American shores, both Q-Tip and 3rd Bass’ MC Serch were quick to show their respect by hopping on-stage with the band (likely the event that planted the seed for Heavy Rhyme Experience), and the latter rapper even predicted that The Brand New Heavies would be the source material for a decade’s worth of loops and samples for rap producers. Serch’s enthusiastic forecast never quite materialized, but it is hard to argue with his logic after you hear this landmark collaborative experiment. A live hip-hop band wasn’t a complete novelty at the time — proto-rapper Gil Scott-Heron utilized jazz backing, Tackhead was the house band for Sugarhill Records all the way back in the late ’70s, and the self-proclaimed “world’s one and only hip-hop band,” Stetsasonic had been fully live for several years by that point — but never before had rap taken such an on-the-fly, jam-like approach. Spontaneous combustion resulted. Never before (and perhaps never since) had the Heavies managed to sound this deliciously in-the-pocket and playful, and the MCs beautifully follow their lead. Guru sounds looser and more whimsical on “It’s Gettin Hectic” than on any Gang Starr track. Simon Bartholomew’s teasing guitar lines poke holes in Grand Puba’s swollen-tongued bluster on “Who Makes the Loot?” Kool G. Rap is given the blaxploitation backing he had always deserved. And Ed. O.G. and Pharcyde do verbal gymnastics that must be heard. But every vocalist here blooms from the pairing. The only regret is that N’Dea Davenport was not included in some capacity, considering how much she added to the Heavies. Too bad, as well, that there was never a volume two. One wonders what sort of magic Posdnuos and Trugoy of De La Soul, the Leaders of the New School trio, Rakim, or Chuck D. could have conjured had they been tapped as collaborators, or from the West Coast Ice Cube and Del tha Funkee Homosapien. Still, Heavy Rhyme Experience, Vol. 1 is a match made in heaven.

Justice System – Rooftop Soundcheck

Justice System’s history begins at Woodland High School in Greenburgh, New York, where in 1990 rappers John “Jahbaz” Dawson and Tom “Folex” Foley hooked up with longtime friends Chris “Wizard C. Roc” Nordland and the brothers Alex (“Coz Boogie”) and Eric (“Eric G.”) Gopoian to form a band that, as Folex puts it, “would rely on real people making music and having something to say, and not hiding it behind DATs and samples.” A year later, multi-instrumentalist Alex “Mo’Better Al” Auld came on board to add some spice to the mix and help with demos.Rooftop Soundcheck was the group’s debut album in 1994. It wasn’t the first Hip Hop record to use live instruments, but it was the first Hip Hop record where all you got was live, original music.
