Oh No ‎- Now-Again Music Library Vol. 01 – Oh No Vs. Now-Again
null

Coming off the critically acclaimed albums Exodus Into Unheard Rhythms and, most recently, Dr. No’s Oxperiment, Cali-based producer Oh No delves into the funk and soul of the Now-Again Records and Soul-Cal Records catalogs, bringing a modern meaning to the concept of library music.

Beats within range in mood and style, as Oh No applies his swaggering hip-hop treatment to the sinister guitars and horn licks from Omaha’s L.A. Carnival; the crashing high school auditorium drums of Houston’s Kashmere Stage Band; the feel-good modern soul harmonies of Soul-Cal acts like Luther Davis and Pure Essence; and more.

Koushik – Now-Again Music Library Vol. 03 – Koushik Vs. Now-Again
null

Koushik is no stranger to the Now-Again Records catalog. His “Cold Beats” EP, featuring Percee P and based around samples from the Cold Heat compilation (NA 5017), contained so many raw interpretations of those heavy funk skillets that we had to give him access to the catalog to see what he could cook up next.

Out of the frying pan, into the freezer, then, with Cold Treats. Here Koushik crafts a range of beats that range from horn-driven hip hop (courtesy of The Stark Reality) to bonus beat madness to new takes on the four on the floor disco rhythms of the Record Player… and beyond.

The Shaolin Afronauts – Quest Under Capricorn

null

2011′s debut album from The Shaolin Afronauts ‘Flight Of The Ancients’ was a critical and commercial success story, lauded as a truly original blend of the sounds of 1970′s West Africa, Ethiopia and the pioneering and progressive avant-garde jazz artists of the same period. Now in 2012, The Shaolin Afronauts continue their musical journey with the follow up album ‘Quest Under Capricorn’ and the groups musical progression is apparent from the outset. Quest Under Capricorn marks a development and progression of The Shaolin Afronauts sound, which evokes the spirit of the mighty Sun Ra, Mulatu Astatke, Fela Kuti, John Coltrane and a host of other free thinking musical pioneers and explorers… and sets the group well apart from the glut of less explorative and imaginative groups of a similar ilk. The Shaolin Afronauts return with a highly original sound made up of classic influences, but tailor made for the 21st century.

Grover Washington Jr – A Secret Place

null

A Secret Place was produced by Creed Taylor and issued on his Kudu imprint, while the versatile David Matthews arranged the horn section. This lineup may not be surprising, but the scope of the recording is. Washington could have gone the easy route and followed up his R&B chart success with a series of uptempo, rousing tracks that leaned heavier on funk–in the style of the title tracks of both his previous albums, 1974′s Mister Magic and 1975′s Feel So Good. But he went in a different direction, at least partially. The bottom line on A Secret Place is that while the set did well commercially, it got nowhere near the critical praise of its predecessors. That’s a shame, because it is a truly fine album whose grooves and pleasures stand the test of time easily.(cduniverse)

Personnel: Grover Washington, Jr. (saxophone, soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Eric Gale , Steve Khan (guitar); Gerry Niewood (saxophone, alto saxophone); John Gatchell, Randy Brecker (trumpet); Dave Grusin (piano); Anthony Jackson (bass instrument); Harvey Mason, Sr. (drums); Ralph MacDonald (percussion).

Electro Deluxe – Live In Paris

null

Electro Deluxe A wolf in sheeps clothing. Six of the most sought-after musicians on the french musical scene. Since 2001, we have evolved from our early electro-jazz sound to a energetic cocktail of dirty soul & funk with a touch of class. After ten years of criss-crossing the globe (China, India, Canada, Mexico, Europe) and performing at some of the most prestigious festivals (Montréal Jazz Festival, Jazz à Vienne, Cervantino, Solidays), we celebrate our tenth anniversary with the release of the double album “Live in Paris” recorded with the full artillery of our Big Band.

A reservoir of musical talent, and inspired by the mythical “Funk Brothers” of Motown lore, we work as studio musicians for among others, Universal & Motown recording artists, Ben Oncle Soul and Hocus Pocus, who have equally participated on our records. At the heart of the groove scene and with the ability to cross-over into other genres, we have enjoyed modest success in our home country of France with each of our last 2 albums topping the jazz charts in France while performing entirely in English. More Deluxe than Electro, and not bound to any one musical reference, we continue to push the boundries of our music.

Grover Washington Jr. – Feels So Good

null

When Feels So Good was originally issued in 1975, few probably realized that it was destined to be a classic album, virtually defining smooth jazz at its very best. Grover Washington Jr.’s saxophone approach remains beautifully melodious yet powerfully resolute. Bob James not only contributed tasty keyboards but arrangements as well, providing Washington (and others) with opulent and pulsing frameworks for soloing. Each track is the optimum length, with plenty of room to stretch out without any monotony setting in. (cduniverse)

Arranger: Bob James.

Personnel: Eric Gale (guitar); Barry Finclair, Lewis Eley, Guy Lumia, Harold Kohon, David Nadien, Raoul Poliakin, Max Ellen, Emanuel Green, Harry Lookofsky (violin); Manny Vardi, Al Brown (viola); Seymour Barab, Charles McCracken (cello); Sid Weinberg (oboe); Jon Faddis, Randy Brecker, Bob Millikan, John Frosk (trumpet); Barry Rogers (trombone); Dave Taylor, Alan Raph (bass trombone); Gary King, Louis Johnson (bass guitar); Kenneth “Spider Webb” Rice , Jimmy Madison, Steve Gadd (drums); Ralph MacDonald (percussion).

Kelan Philip Cohran & The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble – Kelan Philip Cohran & The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble

null

At Eighty Five, jazz legend Philip Cohran is doing pretty well. Keeping busy in his adopted hometown of Chicago he’s still a regular sight around town, and by the sounds of this latest album, recorded last summer, he’s not lost any of his edge. Cohran is still best known for lending his expertise to Sun Ra’s Arkestra, most notably contributing zither to ‘Angels and Demons at Play’. Over the last umpteen years however his focus has been on his Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, where he (accompanied by no less than eight of his family) has managed to stumble across a unique and hauntingly beautiful sound. This is not the jazz you might be expecting to hear but a mélange of collected sound from the folk music of North Africa to the zipping Gypsy ballads of Eastern Europe. Choosing brass was a smart move on Cohran’s part, and he avoids and comparisons to the dearth of brass bands that polluted record shelves in the 1960s and 1970s. His brass is practiced and honed to a razor sharp point, and the distinct, rounded tones add depth and originality to his phenomenal compositions. For our money there are few jazz ensembles as constantly arresting as the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, and this is possibly their most enjoyable set yet. (boomkat)

Monophonics – In Your Brain

null

Over the past seven years, the Monophonics have staked their claim as one of California’s premier bands. Raised amid the Bay Area’s rich musical culture, the Monophonics have proudly carried on the tradition of music native to their hometown which flourished during the birth of psychedelia.

Monophonics were formed in ’05; originally a instrumental ensemble comprised of guitarist Ian McDonald, bassist Myles O’Mahony, saxophonist Alex Baky, trumpeter Ryan Scott, and drummer Austin Bohlman, the band has recently added the dynamic soul vocals of keyboardist Kelly Finnigan. The result is a psychedelic soul & heavy funk sound, which harks back to the stylings of the late ’60s and early ’70s, all while keeping its feet planted in the present.

Franco Micalizzi – Roma A Mano Armata

Funky Franco Micalizzi – the soundtrack to the mid 70s Italian crime drama Roma A Mano Aramata – prime pulpy grooves laid down for the Umberto Lenzi film!
