Lack Of Afro – One Way: Remixes & Rarities

null

In a remarkably short amount of time, Adam Gibbons (Lack Of Afro) has amassed an extensive and varied body of work. From his own recordings, featuring his multi instrumental skills, to producing, DJ-ing and of course, remixing tracks by a huge range of different artists. This 27 track, 2 disc collection One Way – Remixes & Rarities brings together the cream of Adams reworkings, some remixes of his own tracks by like minded artists, and excitingly some previously unreleased material that sees the light of day for the very first time on this killer collection of funk fuelled, dance floor fodder.

Floex – Zorya

null

Tomáš Dvořák’s most profound album up to date is going further in exploration of acoustic music (especially classical minimalism) and contemporary electronic. Album which takes as symbol Slavic night guard goddess “Zorya Polunochnaya” explores more deep, subconscious and nightly moods of music. However don’t be mistaken, this may be Floex most energetic album up to date – very adventurous, almost storytelling.

Shlohmo – Bad Vibes

null

Shlohmo drops his second LP of blunted HD beats with ‘Bad Vibes’ for LA’s Friends Of Friends. Hailing from the same scene which produced the likes of Matthewdavid, Flying Lotus and Gaslamp Killer, Shlohmo has carved a cozy niche with his more sensitive, unhurried and gently psychedelic angle on downtempo moods. His carefully detailed beats are quietly conversational and rich with subtle instrumental quirks, placing more emphasis on seductive, laidback moods than the hyper-complex, crossed-eyed psychedelic tendencies of his peers. ‘Bad Vibes’ finds its psychedelia in an abstract line of narration, playing through seamlessly from the tender beginnings of ‘Big Feelings’ to the turning point of ‘Us’, where the sense of melancholy seems to weigh heaviest and his beats begin to fray with a cracked sensitivity, especially in the untold dramas of ‘Trapped In A Burning House’ and the the digitally scuffed chamber pop of ‘Your Stupid Face’. Imagine if Savath & Savalas, Mount Kimbie and Burial were tasked with writing the soundtrack to a melancholy indie flick set in LA, and you’d be somewhere close to the impact of this album. Tip!

Prefuse 73 – The Only She Chapters

null

Following10+ years and 7 albums at the forefront of hiphop and avant rock, Herren’s compositions and interactions have clearly helped to shape the sonic palette of independent music.

The live front has seen Herren undertake several major tours in the last year, including stretches with long-time friend The Gaslamp Killer, as well as Neon Indian, and most noteworthy, working with the Polish Ausko Orchestra – reinterpreting his own material for classical arrangement. This evidenced Herren’s move into modern compositional work, which brings us to The Only She Chapters – a body of music closer in spirit to esteemed modern compositional pieces, rather than a record built fundamentally around beats and loops. The vocals of a number of renowned female musicians have been woven into the album’s fabric, including Zola Jesus, Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond and the late Trish Keenan of Broadcast amongst others.

The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble – From The Stairwell

null

The long-running project of breakcore man Jason Kohnen (aka Bong Ra) and Gideon Kiers, ‘From The Stairwell’ is The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble’s latest shadowy collection of creeping, Lynchian jazz and it might just be their most successful to date. With each album Kohnen and Keirs seem to rely less on their production smarts and more on the qualities of their selection of players, and ‘From The Stairwell’ is truly a testament to that. With incredible smoky vocals from Charlotte Cegarra, achingly melancholy violin from Sarah Anderson and the usual blend of subtle electronics and impressively programmed beats it is easy to dissolve into the band’s 60s movie-soundtrack flecked world. A common comparison is made to similarly located band Bohren Und Der Club of Gore, but The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble are somewhat more hopeful than that, occasionally letting slivers of light filter into their pitch-black jazz.
