DZA – Five-Finger Remixes

null

DZA is a super-versatile beat maker from Moscow, RBMA graduate, Pitchfork coverboy, and alongside fellow Pixelord head to the ‘Fly Russia’ movement. He made his debut to the world in 2010 when EB released his beat tape ‘Five-Finger Discount’. Shortly after, DZA asked friends to remix single tracks off his tape.

The results are now bundled into epic 60 minutes of ‘Five-Finger Remixes’ available all digital and as a lush white music cassette of only 100 copies. The tape comes with an exclusive sticker, full audio download and a special discount.

Young Montana? – Limerence

null

Limerence is the debut album by Young Montana?, the 20 year-old producer who was plucked from obscurity out of Coventry, UK when Mary Anne Hobbs of the BBC Radio 1 anointed him as her “Favorite Unsigned Artist of 2010.”

Playful yet complex, the controlled chaos of Limerence displays Young Montana?’s pristine sense of sonic exploration. Showing remarkable skill with sample collage work, Young Montana? is running circles around anyone else attempting this sort of beat fusion right now.

A breathless and body-moving ride, Limerence has a completely new sound and is the fresh slap to the face you’ve been waiting for.

fLako – The Mesektet

null

‘The Mesektet’, in ancient egyptian mythology, is one of the two solar boats used by the sun god ‘Ra’ to travel through the cycle of night and day and carry the moon across the sky. It is told that he died every dusk, had to fight the dark forces of the underworld and bring light to the dead souls as he passed through – just to be reborn in the morning. Just like the sun god, uprising producer fLako uses ‘The Mesektet’ to end the cycle of darkness and prepare for his own rebirth, marking the end of an era in his style of production and move forward into new musical directions, which he already started to explore on his ‘Mini Toolbooth EP’. This release includes a collection of previously unreleased or only digitally available works from the time up until 2008.

Mike Gao – Sun Shadows

null

Sun Shadows is Mike Gao’s first solo release following his contribution to All City’s LA 10″ series. The heart of the album deals with the shadows of failed love, leading to a drive to change the production game itself through technological innovation, ultimately manifesting into a brighter, sunnier future. The aesthetics have been carefully selected to deliver his message, an album far from a soulless scientific demonstration: Sun Shadows is a direct pipeline into Mike Gao’s heart, bridged by self made technology to effortlessly improvise chords straight from the soul and write drums by beatboxing into an iPhone.

40 Winks – It’s The Trip

null

No hay banda! (“there is no band”, Mulholland Dr. 2001) pretty much sums up where 40 Winks aims to go with its instrumental hip hop: meticulously chop and paste samples together, to create an atmosphere of beats and vibes which steps beyond unimaginative loops. “Join 40 Winks on a road trip to anywhere. Bring your music player and tell your honey you won’t be home for dinner. It’s the trip, not the destination.“

Robot Koch and John Robinson – Robot Robinson

null

From a laments perspective you can call this Jahcoozi’s Robot Koch meets Scienz of Life’s John Robinson. However we here at Project: Mooncircle like to see this as two dynamic forces of nature coming together in parallel universes, delivering cosmic opted sonics with science-fiction narrative conventions in a metaphysical tone. Robot Robinson is the FUTURE from Earth to Mars to Venus to Jupiter and Beyond, this project spells out the attempts to bring a different pitch of vocals to the world of Electronic Music. Robinson being no stranger to the scientifical lyrical approach along with Robot’s evolutionary voyage prone soundscapes this one is a sure shot! The Future of Music is in Good Hands.

Shlohmo – Places EP

null

From the first early glimpses of Henry Laufer’s work as Shlohmo, it was clear that he was on to something. With an effortless grasp on spatial sound design combined with deceptively simple melodies, subtle bass drops and swinging slow motion drums constructed from lo-fi laptop recordings, Henry’s work on the Shlohmoshun Deluxe and Camping EP immediately put him into the forefront of a new wave of talent rising among the hordes of west coast beat makers.

Inspired by the desire to write songs and create a release of full-range instrumentation/vocals all his own, Laufer promptly began home-recording Bad Vibes, his proper full-length debut album for the Friends of Friends label. The Places EP includes the lead single of that very name and 3 unique b-sides from this recording period… giving a small window into the maturing mind and exciting future output of Wedidit Collective’s head honcho, Shlohmo…

74 Miles Away – 74 Miles Away

null

MPM have teamed up with the Laid Back Radio collective from Brussels to add a new chapter to the metaphysics of a jazzthing. 74 Miles Away is a collaboration between Belgian jazz pianist/composer Pierre Anckaert and producers Monkey Robot (previously known as Infinitskills), curated by LBR founder Julius Mourlon. Pierre Anckaert composed and recorded four electric jazz tracks with his trio. Monkey Robot have radically reworked these four songs featuring singers AHU (One Handed Music, best known from the first Flying Lotus album), Carina Andersson (the voice behind 4 Hero’s epic take on Minnie Riperton’s “Les Fleurs”) and Miles Bonny (MPM, DJ Day). 74 Miles Away take you on a trip from the days of Bob James and Herbie Hancock to the future beat and soul sound of today. The Insane Warrior – We Are The Doorways

null

RJ’s Electrical Connections is pleased to bring you The Insane Warrior. In a way, this album could be considered a soundtrack to a movie that doesn’t exist (at the moment). A strictly instrumental affair, the album “We Are The Doorways” was loosely inspired by horror and sci-fi film scores of the wonderfully fruitful period of 1976-1984. Several things mark this record – for one, there is a departure from the concise nature of most modern pop-oriented records. Expansive, open passages – often with no rhythmic elements – recall the work of both Eno and John Carpenter. These give way to spastic outbursts of energy in places. At other times, the tension-meets-groove aesthetic of Dario Argento’s pet Goblin give birth to some surprisingly funky cuts as well.

While heavily leaning on big, expansive analog synth sounds, angular rhythms, and blissful ambient passages, the record still maintains the attention to groove that RJD2′s label is known for. At times jazzy, psychedelic, and introspective, the exploratory nature of the music shines through. The Insane Warrior’s ‘We Are The Doorways’ is yet another unique landmark in the growing catalog of RJ’s Electrical Connections.

fLako – Mini Tollbooth

null

‘Mini Tollbooth’ is inspired by a novel called Phantom Tollbooth. The film adaptation from 1961 is so beautiful. I like to get lost in these childish worlds of freedom, where everything is possible. This modern fairy tale is about a young boy named Milo who is bored by the world around him. He feels everything is a waste of time. He comes home from school one day to find in his bedroom an anonymous package containing a miniature tollbooth and a map of the Lands Beyond. He takes the map, drives through in his toy car, and instantly finds himself driving on a road to Expectations. Enjoying the ride, he pays no attention to his route and soon becomes lost in the Doldrums, a colorless place where thinking and laughing are not allowed. He is having plenty more adventures like watching Chroma the Great conduct his orchestra in playing the colors of the sunset or meeting The Awful Dynne, a genie who collects noises for Dr. Dischord.

Prefuse 73/Jaytram/Epstein – Remixed

null

This remix record wanders through the minds of Jaytram (drummer for Yeasayer) and Prefuse 73. They were both asked to plunder and ravage the entire Epstein catalog as the source material and pass it through their respective creative processes. These two creators are less worried about a notion of sanctity of the original and instead are visionaries with the material, engineering something previously unimaginable. There are about 1 million adjectives needed to try to cartograph a tangible roadmap to where this record leads, but we would rather you just take your own journey.

Dday One – Heavy Migration

null

The very essence of great instrumental hip hop albums should revolve heavily around two things…heavy drums and beautiful samples. Lately, instrumental heads have held in high regards labels like Bully, no doubt due to their knack for handpicking amazing DJ’s and producers for a series of limited edition releases from the likes of Sixtoo, Maker, DJ Signify, Joe Beats and more. That said, it’s time we stop drooling over the next Bully release and take note of Dday One, whose last LP, Loop Extensions, went from highly unknown, to heavily slept on, as it is now a much sought after item. If you missed releases like the Signal Path LP, it’s time to wake up…Dday has arrived! Picking up the pace on the beats here, unlike his previous down-tempo heroin coma tracks, there is still plenty of head-nodding happening here.
