Onra – Deep In The Night EP

null

Globetrotting producer Onra has staked his claim as one of the most exciting beat-makers of the past few years, thanks to releases like his Chinoseries collections (made from scratch with samples found while traveling Asia) and the Pitchfork-acclaimed Long Distance LP. All the while, his electrifying live MPC performances around the world – everywhere from the Red Bull Music Academy in Bucharest and Giles Peterson’s Worldwide Festival, to LA’s down-and-dirty bass sanctuary the Low End Theory – add new dimensions to the cosmic grooves Onra puts on tape.

With his first release for Fool’s Gold, the Deep In The Night EP, Onra continues to chart new musical territory. The EP’s five tracks meld the snap of vintage jheri curl R&B with squiggling disco synths and deeply funky, late-night vibes. From the new jack swinging “After Hours” (featuring T3 of Slum Village) to the moody, screwed loops of closer “Hold Tight,” Deep In The Night‘s cut-and-paste danceability proves a must-listen for any occasion. After all, it’s always after hours somewhere…

J Dilla – Rebirth Of Detroit

null

J Dilla’s mother, Mrs. Maureen “MaDukes” Yancey, is pleased to announce a new album of unreleased material from her son. “Rebirth of Detroit” will feature new music from the late producer, as well as Detroit’s finest emcees and musicians who have both worked with and/or been influenced by J Dilla including Amp Fiddler, Illa J, Frank Nitt, Chuck Inglish (Cool Kids), Boldy James, Phat Kat, Guilty Simpson, Jay Electronica, Asher Roth, Danny Brown, DJ J-Rocc of the Beat Junkies, DJ Dez, Fat Ray, Will Sessions and more. It was important to Maureen Yancey that this project be a collaboration of emcees and musicians working in the Detroit Hip Hop community.

“This will bring together artists that have drifted away from one another and haven’t been able to work with each other lately. It’s a healing process for the city. For individuals, it’s going to bring back the love and the passion for the music and for what hip-hop has to offer.” – Maureen “MaDukes” Yancey

All songs produced by J Dilla except “Let’s Pray Together” co-produced by Amp-Fiddler.

Kelan Philip Cohran & The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble – Kelan Philip Cohran & The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble

null

At Eighty Five, jazz legend Philip Cohran is doing pretty well. Keeping busy in his adopted hometown of Chicago he’s still a regular sight around town, and by the sounds of this latest album, recorded last summer, he’s not lost any of his edge. Cohran is still best known for lending his expertise to Sun Ra’s Arkestra, most notably contributing zither to ‘Angels and Demons at Play’. Over the last umpteen years however his focus has been on his Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, where he (accompanied by no less than eight of his family) has managed to stumble across a unique and hauntingly beautiful sound. This is not the jazz you might be expecting to hear but a mélange of collected sound from the folk music of North Africa to the zipping Gypsy ballads of Eastern Europe. Choosing brass was a smart move on Cohran’s part, and he avoids and comparisons to the dearth of brass bands that polluted record shelves in the 1960s and 1970s. His brass is practiced and honed to a razor sharp point, and the distinct, rounded tones add depth and originality to his phenomenal compositions. For our money there are few jazz ensembles as constantly arresting as the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, and this is possibly their most enjoyable set yet. (boomkat)

Anthony Valadez – Just Visiting

null

Anthony Valadez grew up in the bustling cultural hub of the San Fernando Valley, right outside of Los Angeles. By junior high, young Anthony was tuning into KCRW where he was particularly drawn to a show where Michael Mixxin Moor was combining political speeches by the like of Malcolm X with acid jazz instrumentals. By the mid-2000’s Anthony was becoming a staple of the musical scene in Los Angeles with regular gigs at the Temple Bar and an eclectic radio show at California State University Northridge where his guests were up and coming stars like Sa-Ra, Blu, Exile and Aloe Blacc.

When he was living in an apartment complex with Flying Lotus as his neighbor, an organic collaborative environment led to the budding young Brainfeeder-to-be to give a bit of insight into what turned out to be Anthony Valadez’ first release, “Go!” a 7” released by Recordbreakin’ in 2006. Always ambitious, Anthony was not satisfied with just looping and triggering sounds. Eventually, he sought to collaborate with real musicians and produce in the fullest sense of the word. This was the genesis of Just Visiting, his debut album on Plug Research. Over the course of the past three years, Anthony has collaborated with musicians, from other continents, other cities and other area codes of Los Angeles, to create an album that is as diverse as any of his radio shows. Sometimes musicians would come over to his apartment after gigs, record and crash on his couch. Other times he’d be getting Pro Tools files sent over from Amsterdam that he would then arrange and chop-up on his MPC. “I feel like each song is different but the common denominator is that it has soul,” explains Anthony. “I feel like this is a soul record in so many different directions, from soul jazz to weirdo soul.”

For our 12th installment, we have Modlee & Vlooper who are a great representation of the Montreal, QC beat culture. Although their chemistry in sound is undeniable, their connection is much deeper. VLOOPER is part of the Alaclair Ensemble who have a deep progressive momentum that is spreading worldwide. His solo work and collaboration release ‘Analog Love’ with Modlee was a great success in 2010. Oddisee – People Hear What They See

null

“This album is about influence, inspiration, perception & reality. Every song was written in an outside environment, so that I could observe the subjects that would become my subject matter. All too often in Hip Hop, reality is limited to that of the artists own, actual experiences. People Hear What They See is my attempt to liberate the MC from those constraints & allow reality to be penned other than my own. Listening to congressmen & lawyers converse on the steps of the supreme court inspired ‘American Greed’, Watching a couple argue over the phone in a bar inspired ‘Maybes’. By having a visual representation of my subject matter, my hopes are that the listener will see them through the worlds & melodies of my songs.”

Leon Ware ft. Quadron – Orchids For The Sun / Hold Tight

null

Leon Ware teams up electronic pop soul duo Quadron! Leon is one of greatest artist-songwriter-composers and a living legend of American soul music – Quadron is a modern act whose genuine love for classic Motown and lesser-celebrated soul makes them a shining beacon as far as we’re concerned – so we figured this would be a leftfield win of a joint effort, and it most certainly is! Ware’s voice is holding up very well, thank you very much, and he contributes keys and synth bass on top of vocals. “Orchids For The Sun” has rich instrumentation, too – voila and violin, sax, clarinet, trumpet and flute over percolating beats. “Hold Tight” is just as strong, the electronics and live instrumentation working really well together! Really fresh, rewarding stuff! (dustygroove)

Marcus Miller – Renaissance

null

Renaissance finds Miller offering up an especially emotive 13-song collection that includes eight richly inspired original compositions that swing from a tip of the porkpie to the CTI Records sound of the `70s (“CEE-TEE-EYE”) to an introspective and ultimately hope-filled rumination about the island off the coast of Dakar in Africa known as “Gorée (Go-ray).” Renaissance also includes five cover songs that canvas works by soul-jazz culture band WAR, new wave-soul starlet Janelle Monáe, New York jazz dignitary Weldon Irvine, Brazilian musical ambassador Ivan Lins and Christian composer Luther “Mano” Hanes. Though the CD primarily features Miller’s smokin’ new band, it also features special guest vocalists Dr. John, Rubén Blades and Gretchen Parlato.
