Dwele – Greater Than One

null

“Greater Than One,” the fifth studio album from Grammy nominated singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Dwele. Notable features on “Greater Than One” are provided by Monica Blair, LaLa Hathaway, Black Milk and J Tait. Dwele, who wrote every track on the album, plays keyboard, horns and drums on a majority of the songs. Dwele took some time since his fourth work 2010′s W.ants. W.orld. W.omen (W.W.W) to gain some international inspiration. What resulted was a singular, limited edition project and a precursor to “Greater Than One” which fans will have to see to hear. Dwele’s newest offering is a mixture of silky ballads and crispy up-tempo jams.

Sola Rosa – Low and Behold, High and Beyond

null

With six albums under his belt, a raft of accolades and well over a decade of producing genre-splitting music, Andrew Spraggon’s work as Sola Rosa has cemented him as one of the world’s most exciting and versatile producers. From a humble, self-released one man project, Sola Rosa has grown to a live collective of international repute. Successfully melding hip hop, reggae, jazz, latin, soul and funk, the group have never sat comfortably in one box, but with Spraggon’s guidance, that restlessness has been channelled into six succinct albums. With all that behind them, Sola Rosa are set to release their new album, Low and Behold, High and Beyond. Written over New Zealand’s past two summers, Spraggon has drawn together a host of familiar names and new faces, and produced an album that’s more beat-driven, but as always, tinged with his trademark soul and funk. Spikey Tee, Ben White, Matt Short and Julien Dyne have joined Spraggon to form the musical core of the group. While Olivier Daysoul, L.A. Mitchell, Ned Worboys and Miles Bonny all lend vocals to the project.

Will Sessions – Mix Takes

null

Will Sessions impressed with the meticulous craftsmanship of their studio re-workings of the classic tracks on “The Elmatic Instrumentals.” With their new two-part video “Mix Takes,” the five-piece band is taking a similar approach in recreating some of their favorite songs–only this time it was all recorded and filmed live in real time. Whether referencing music by jazz greats Herbie Hancock and Bob James or reinterpreting beats by J Dilla, Madlib, and Black Milk, it’s all presented with seamless transitions in the style of a mixtape, and “Mix Takes” both showcases the band’s individual talents and reflects the airtight performances that have made them one of the hottest live bands in Detroit.

Shigeto – Huron River Drive

null

The “Huron River Drive” single comes with a selection of remixes, each with its own distinctive character: Evenings’ remix bobs along on an understated hip hop beat, while the Sun Hammer remix strips the track down to its bassline and then adds analogue oscillator textures reminiscent of the earliest days of electronic music. The B-side of the single includes another Lineage tune, entitled “Field Day”, to which Braille, aka Praveen Sharma—one half of acclaimed Brooklyn neo-garage trailblazers Sepalcure—adds a wistful, nostalgic intro and a house-influenced beat. Sun Glitters’ remix of “Lineage” moves in similar territory, integrating vocal samples and a slow, loping kickdrum pattern. Taken as a whole, the single’s an exploration of the possibilities inherent in Shigeto’s sound, and serves as a fine introduction to the work of one of Brooklyn’s more interesting young producers.

Vijay Iyer Trio – Accelerando

null

Pianist-‐composer Vijay Iyer’s career has moved on an ever-‐accelerating arc over the past decade and a half, with the Indian-‐American artist earning a slew of international honors for his intrepid, multi-‐hued vision of 21st-‐century music. The latest chapter of this compelling story in contemporary jazz comes with the Vijay Iyer Trio’s Accelerando, an album driven by the visceral, universal, intoxicating experience of rhythm. Accelerando sees Iyer and his telepathic trio mates – bassist Stephan Crump and drummer Marcus Gilmore – go both deep and wide. They light up material that ranges from a brace of bold Iyer originals and pieces by great jazz composers (Duke Ellington, Herbie Nichols, Henry Threadgill) to surprising interpretations of vintage and recent pop and funk tunes (Michael Jackson, Heatwave, Flying Lotus). Absorbing and infectious, this is jazz about not only the mind but the body.

With an advanced education in the hard sciences and his facility for complex music, Iyer could have been pegged as a “cerebral musician.” But, he insists, “I actually experience music on a visceral level, the way most people do. Dance is just a bodily way of listening to music – it’s a universal response. Jazz has always had some sort of dance impulse at its core. Bebop grew out of swing, which was a dance rhythm that became art music. I never want to lose that foundation of rhythmic communication in my work. That’s what Accelerando is concerned with, that physical reality of music. For me, music is action.”

Oh No – Dr. No’s Kali Tornado Funk

null

When cut loose on the Rudy Ray Moore/Dolemite catalog to put together the release that came to be known as OhNoMite, Oh No was like the clichéd kid in a candy store. With so much material to pull from it was inevitable that some cuts couldn’t be squeezed into the final OhNoMite project, some would with different mixes and some were never fully realized. Oh No turned this material over to his alter-ego, Dr. No, for the further finishing touches for this all instrumental outting. The result is contained here on Dr. No’s Kali Tornado Funk. Coming at you with fists flying this full length features instrumentals and alternate mixes from the OhNoMite record, thoroughly funk filled blasts that didn’t find their way into the final OhNoMite project and much more. Kali Tornado Funk is the total experience; the Doctor’s prescription for those whose asses just don’t move enough, a recommended treatment for those whose ailment is a lack of soul. Side effects include having a thoroughly good time and in rare instances a desire to perform karate moves.

As Dolemite would say “Can you dig it?” We’re sure you can.

Christian Scott – Christian aTunde Adjuah

null

Edison Award winning trumpeter-composer-producer-bandleader Christian Scott releases his compelling new album, Christian aTunde Adjuah. The follow-up to his critically-acclaimed Yesterday You Said Tomorrow is an inspired and provocative two-disc, 23-track collection. With the artist s trumpet at the heart of most of the tunes, the album features reflective ballads, light and dreamy soundscapes, guitar-edged and rock-inflected cookers, trumpet ecstasies as well as clarion calls and anguished wails. A tour de force masterwork, Christian aTunde Adjuah opens a wide window on Scott s present as well as his past (especially in reaction to the jazz trads complaining about his breaking free from the jazz standard) and his auspicious creative future. In his liners, Scott writes that the listener will hear on the album a stretching of jazz, not a replacement. That is what I hope younger people will be able to take away from it as well the idea that innovation should never be regarded as a problem in artistic practice, that one should always be aware of what has come before, and finally, that criticisms shouldn t evoke paralysis, [but] should inspire action.
