Union – Analogtronics

null

After waiting patiently behind two singles, a dope video, and a neon-blue triangle shaped vinyl, Union is ready to unleash the most musically challenging, painstakingly crafted, MC-packed album in the dawn of 2012 – Analogtronics. Featuring Talib Kweli, Elzhi, MF DOOM, Roc Marciano, Guilty Simpson, and more, Union produces space-aged bangers that mold perfectly around each guest, in addition to sprinkling in a few lush, eye-widening instrumentals. This is the full length we have all been waiting for.

Shigeto – Lineage EP

null

Zach Saginaw consistently grounds his music in a deeply personal, familial context; his grandmother inspired two releases, his producer aliases, Shigeto and Frank Omura, both reference family names and it’s not for nothing that his latest release as Shigeto is titled Lineage.

While only Saginaw could speak to the ancestral motivation being referenced on the eight instrumental songs that comprise the mini-LP, Lineage, it’s easy to see it as an acknowledgement of debt to musical forebears, reverent respect due to the jazz, hip-hop, funk and folk that animates these eight songs. And while these elements aren’t new to Saginaw’s work, never has he demonstrated such complete command of his material. Each song is a complex constellation of sounds and ideas, but his compositional focus and restraint grounds songs that are otherwise cosmically inclined.

Sam Champ x Okayplayer – D’Angelo Live! [Mixtape]

null

You may have noticed me using the header Mixtape Mondays on a few posts recently–something we intend to  make a semi-regular feature here at Okayplayer. We figured we would kick it off properly with an actual OKP mixtape; something official, something original, something exclusive. Something worthy to place alongside DJ Soul‘s incredible Best of Common and Dilla mixtapes. And then we was like, Hmm what’s happening the last monday in January that we could use as a theme? Superbowl? Newt Gingrich? Or MAYBE the phoenix-like reemergence of our beloved D’Angelo, who is currently spreading his fiery musical wings across the waters in Europe.

Accordingly, we asked super-thorough DJ/producer and Soulquarian obsessive Sam Champ (you may remember the tough remix of “Left & Right” from his remix LP) to cut together this official OKP D’Angelo Live mix for us. Most of these amazing live renditions of classic D’Angelo material have surfaced online in one form or the other before but Sam Champ has skillfully compiled them into one seamless blend to create the ultimate OKP fantasy concert for those of us not blessed enough to have been born Scandinavian. So without further ado, please find below one hour and twelve minutes (and some seconds) of streamable D’Angelo, recorded live on various stages across the world (and with a young Anthony Hamilton clearly audible on background vox in quite a few)–enough to keep all fly girls’ nipples and toes tingly with excitement until the arrival of a PURPORTED NEW D’ANGELO ALBUM SOMETIME LATER THIS YEAR. D’Angelo is back, baby. Mixtape Mondays is here. Get happy.

Mecca:83 – D A Y B R E A K

From Mecca: “I didn’t really have any theme set down for this release – I kina figured that would be cheating! – I literally just created whatever came into my head…and flipped whatever samples were handy! There’s some 80s Funk in there, some jazz based business and even some good old fashioned boom bap. I’m not sure whether i’d call it an EP, a beat tape or something else….I guess i’ll let you decide :-)

Esperanza Spalding – Radio Music Society

null

It has not taken Esperanza Spalding long to emerge as one of the brightest lights in the musical world. Listeners familiar with her stunning 2008 Heads Up International debut, Esperanza, and her best-selling 2010 release Chamber Music Society, were well aware that the young bassist, vocalist and composer from Portland, Oregon was the real deal, with a unique and style-spanning presence, deeply rooted in jazz yet destined to make her mark far beyond the jazz realm. That judgment was confirmed on February 13, 2011, when Spalding became the first jazz musician to receive the GRAMMY Award for Best New Artist.

Radio Music Society is a companion, rather than a sequel, to Spalding’s previous disc, which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart. Among its many strengths, Radio Music Society is a celebration of the men and women who have helped cultivate Spalding’s talent, as well as those who have nurtured her vision and inspired her along the way. “I’ve had the honor and blessing of working with so many phenomenal jazz musicians over the years,” she says. “As I’ve gotten to know them and their music, I’ve grown to love them as family and colleagues. I wished for an opportunity for us all to interpret songs together, so that they can be heard and received by a larger audience. That music is realized by many of the brilliant musicians who are part of Spalding’s ever-expanding universe. In addition to longtime partners Lovano, keyboard player Leo Genovese and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, the ranks contain jazz legends Jack DeJohnette and Billy Hart; guitar heroes Jef Lee Johnson and Lionel Loueke; an array of master vocalists including Algebra Blessett, Lalah Hathaway, Gretchen Parlato, Leni Stern and Becca Stevens; hip-hop giant Q-Tip (who performs on and co-produced two tracks); and two Portland-based musicians, Janice Scroggins and Dr. Thara Memory, who provided essential mentorship in Spalding’s youth.

James Pants – Beats Archive II

null

Back in Sept. 2011 we brought you the first installment, James Pants Beat Archive Pt. 1, aka “JP Failed Rap Beats 2004-2008.” In the words of the producer himself, this series is, “from a vast collection of oddities, soddities, and heresies from back in the days when I thought I could be a rap producer.”

In our opinion, meaning no disrespect to the world of talented rappers, these beats work great without any loop-ruiners spitting all over them.

So here’s the second set, 2006-2010. Cover image by Jeff Jank. Photo by Schiko. Sludge by BP. Enjoy.

Gonjasufi – MU.ZZ.LE

null

A brand new mini-album from one the most charismatic figures on the Warp roster. Once again the most hip-hop mystic you will ever encounter brings us this brilliant 10 track release. The album’s downtempo strings, heartbreaking soul, reanimated hip-hop and crackling haunting vocal stylings are stitched as a running thread throughout each song like a patchwork quilt. It’s a lonely journey that will take you through the innermost thoughts of Gonjasufi’s darkest hours.

Sonnymoon – 2012 EP

null

With this time now upon us there is a feeling of inevitable momentum forward through our man-made linear arches of time. In a day when it becomes harder and harder for artists to truly represent their cultural surroundings and sift through the monotony of the machine, Sonnymoon takes the opportunity to welcome the future with their EP, 2012. As a continuation of their previous foundation of sound laid down in 2010 with Golden Age, 2012 looks to the future with excitement and hope. This lush EP bubbles and flows with the feeling of space aged spirituals yet to come. Look not towards the future, friends, because the time is Now.
