Fat Thumbs Ronnie (A Unity Sextet Release) – Time To Shine

null

When The Unity Sextet released their debut album in January 2012 it came as a real surprise. Rarely in the last few years have a full-on live band captured the spectrum that the sextet embraced with their unique sound-scape: the open-minded grooves of the Sixties, the spiritual instrumental craftsmanship of the Seventies, the sense of globality discovered with Acid Jazz in the Eighties, the immediacy and realness of Nineties’ HipHop, all captured in a style and sound which is distinctively “Now”. With “Time To Shine” Buddy Franco, Fats Young Jr., Cassius Farqhuar, Junior Oliver, Chuck Waldron and ‘Fat Thumbs’ Ronnie introduce the second chapter of their musical story. Fat Thumbs Ronnie, piano wizard and master of synthesizers, already worked on a collection of his own compositions during the initial Unity Sextet album sessions, but only during this summer after the release of his band’s album was he ready to record. Needless to say, the whole Unity team was on the spot, joined by guest musicians Lukas Drinkwater on guitar and Charlie Hearnshaw on saxophone.

“Time To Shine”, as Ronnie calls his debut solo collection of eleven tracks, is a love affair with cinematic, eclectic rhythms and some virtuoso keyboard work, perfectly put into context by producer Lack Of Afro.

Cosmic Compositions – Cosmic Compositions Avant Garde Series Vol.1 -Pharoah Sanders

null

We feel there is huge similarity’s between the Avant-Garde/Free Jazz movement of the 50′s & 60′s & the beat movement of Today. Robert Glasper Experiment – Dillalude

null

Black Radio is already my album of the year (and maybe in my personal top 10 of all time) but yesterday the remix ep was released. The whole EP is damn good but as big fan of J Dilla  i’m absolutely in love with the Dillalude #2 track…. “The Look Of Love” with the “Open Your Eyes” lyrics sang by Casey Benjamin?!?!?!? love! In case you didn’t know Robert Glasper already did something like that on “In My Element” album released in 2007  also on Blue Note Records and you already know that is so good.

“What you did here?” nothing special…. i just took the 2 tracks and putted here because it would be deelicious to listen to a full EP or something one day…. enjoy!

note: yep i know that the J Dillalude track has a different personnel but hey…. it’s Robert Glasper!

Robert Glasper Experiment – Black Radio Recovered: The Remix EP

null

Robert Glasper’s Black Radio received justifiable critical acclaim for its seamless, accessible, groundbreaking blur of jazz, hip-hop, neo-soul, and rock, and achieved a levelo of marketplace success that even the artist couldn’t anticipate. By contrast, Black Radio Recovered: The Remix Ep goes boldy into more exploratory terrain. Glasper isn’t afraid to get sonic. These six tracks – five remixes from the album and an unreleased track from the BR sessions – dige deeper into beats, synthetic soundscapes, samples, and the more outré regions of the Robert Glasper Expertiment’s musical word.

Hidden Orchestra – Archipelago

null

Archipelago is the second album for Tru Thoughts. The album sees Joe Acheson, the musical mastermind behind Hidden Orchestra, continuing to explore and develop many themes that emerged on our debut, Night Walks, adding new ideas, guest players, instruments and found sounds; to name a few, listen up for tap-dancing, bagpipe drones, and Acheson stomping in snow and ice.

New instruments contributing to the many layers of Archipelago include the musical saw of multi-skilled cellist Su-a Lee (as heard to spine-tingling, sci-fi effect on “Vorka”); clarsach and electro-harp from Scottish folk musician Mary MacMaster; clarinet care of Czech musician/composer Floex; and Phil Cardwell’s uniquely versatile trumpet tones. In addition, you’ll hear a range of kantele and zithers which Joe (also a Sony-nominated radio producer and presenter) found and recorded at a school for the blind in Finland, while on location for a radio documentary.

Joy Denalane – Maureen

null

Born and raised in Berlin as the daughter of a German mother and a South African father, Joy Maureen Denalane has sung lyrics in various languages, including English and German as well as the South African languages Xhosa and Shangan. Although her stylish vocals and sounds are clearly influenced by artists ranging from Letta Mbulu to Lauryn Hill, her inspiration to do music, period, originates from hip-hop, especially that of female firebrands Salt-N-Pepa and Roxanne Shanté, which began seeping into Germany in the late ’80s.

“MAUREEN” is a skilful blend of all the elements that made Joy”s previous two albums (“Mamani” and “Born & Raised”) so unique: clear, direct and yet complex lyrics which strike the balance between being lyrical on one hand and effortlessly cool on the other, strong tracks and outstanding production which lies somewhere between modern soul, powerful funk and impressive hip-hop beats.
