Woima Collective – Tezeta

null

The Woima Collective was born from deep within the brass section of renowned German funk unit Poets Of Rhythm, as tenor sax player Johannes Schleiermacher became immersed in the rhythms and modes of the African music that the Poets love so much.

Combining the tight funk of groups like The Heliocentrics and the Poets Of Rhythm, with gnarly abyssinian brass and classic Mulatu-esque organ licks, the twelve tracks on Tezeta breeze into Europe on the Siroccan winds. At times, the band nods to dubby workouts like on the track ‘No Way But Still Walking’, at other times the brass section threaten to get free and atonal on the album closer ‘Wilder Mann’. Nevertheless Tezeta takes the cohesive pulse of North Africa, and fits it in a groove that will run and run for days. The Woima Collective celebrates the hypnotic beauty of Ethiopian scales and African rhythms, but creates an unique sound out of those influences, leaving lots of space for the individual band members to do their dance.

Substantial & Marcus D. Are – Bop Alloy

null

The term “purist” has no place in music, since one genre often influences or gives birth to another genre every few years. Jazz purists are sometimes displeased with the genre being sampled by Hip-Hop artists, but no one can argue that it has inspired a new generation of Jazz enthusiasts. Bop Alloy, comprised of Baltimore, MD emcee Substantial and the Seattle, WA producer Marcus D, is the name that best describes the brand of hip-hop (labeled “Jazz Hop” by today’s listeners) made popular by legendary groups like Gangstarr and A Tribe Called Quest. Bop Alloy haven’t set out to be the next group of artists with a throwback sound, but to “make quality music that anybody, from any walk of life can enjoy,” says Marcus D.

Love Part 1
null

Loving executed third album by Build An Ark. Sounding like classic 70′s folk jazz! Well recommended! This record is their meditation on love – its varying forms and moods, its ecstatic and soothing powers. Build An Ark, under the production of Carlos Niño, have made an album which flows with a real range of volume and density, with arrangements and configurations contrasting against each other. The group has still kept their organic sound while adding several more layers, and charting a distinct progression from their previous two albums.

J Dilla’s Donuts as Performed by Stray Phrases

null

The crowd at The Local 269, a shabby New York City bar on 269 Houston Street, could not have been less interested. The bartender scribbled on his notebook, two older men talked to a woman half their age, and a gaggle of NYU students crowded a booth by the stage. Midterms were distant enough that they could drink on a Sunday. When an ear-splitting free jazz session finally died down, three NYU students put down their drinks took the stage.

Stray Phrases is a jazz trio consisting of Storm Siegel on drums, Dave Mainella on piano, and Evan Crane on bass. On Sunday October 17, 2010, they covered J Dilla’s classic instrumental album Donuts from beginning to end. Metal Lungies is proud to bring you a recording of the whole set.

There are so many tributes to Dilla but this is really good, the bad it is that the quality of recording is not so good, anyway i suggest to listen ;)

Damu The Fudgemunk – Brooklyn Flower

null

Brooklyn Flower is a privately commissioned project in conjunction with Slice-of-Spice Records, and ReDef Records.

The title track is a reworking of the Ramsey Lewis and Minnie Ripperton versions of the Charles Stepney classic, Les Fleur. The intention of this track and project is a dedication for the birth of my daughter. These samples, and others deemed relevant, were referenced to Damu The Fudgemunk, when the project was first commissioned in late 2009, and as expected he produced something quite extraordinary and sublime. This is not a track he created for himself, or intended for commercial release.

Erik L – On Display (Mixed By Devastate)

null

Apart from on Supersci/Flyphonic‘s productions, you might have heard Erik L’s (Erik Lidén) melodic music played by tastemaking radio DJ’s like Gilles Peterson and Benji B, both from BBC Radio. Erik L has worked with artists such as Frank n Dank, Kissey Asplund, Dynamite MC and Hezekiah to name a few, creating a buzz in the underground scene and on sites like 2dopeboyz and Okayplayer etc. His song Soul Symphony was ranked as one of the best beats of 2009 by Benji B of BBC Radio, who has been playing Erik’s stuff frequently in his shows.

On Display is mixed by DJ Devastate, a talented Swedish DJ that released his debut album on the legendary English label BBE Records. This mix features a selection of hip hop and soul productions made by Erik L in the past few years along with some new and previously unreleased material. Lately he has been focusing on getting a new album ready with his group Favorite Flava that also consists of Stray (Mattias Axelsson) and Paul Mac Innes. Favorite Flava released their critically acclaimed debut album ”Different Phase” in 2009 on Ubeat Records.
