The Terence Blanchard Group – Choices

null

Famed trumpeter Terence Blanchard, one of today’s most influential jazz musicians, presents his Concord Jazz debut, Choices; an extraordinary piece of work that addresses the choices we all make in life – both as a society and on a personal level. The album features longstanding Blanchard band members Fabian Almazan on piano, Derrick Hodge on saxophone, Kendrick Scott on drums, Lionel Loueke on guitar and Walter Smith III on saxophone – all of whom significantly contributed to the album’s compositions. Featured guest artists include Dr. Cornel West [famed writer, speaker, educator and activist] and Bilal [singer, musician, composer]. Choices was recorded live at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans from March 5-8, 2009.

Tribe – Rebirth

null

Detroit deep jazz legends Wendell Harrison, Phil Ranelin, Marcus Belgrave and Doug Hammond collaborate with Detroit hero Carl Craig to explore more deep afro-jazz territory! Pioneering techno Dj, Carl Craig has been weaving a jazz thread through the fabric of his music for many years, including his work with the Innerzone Orchestra in the mid 1990′s as well as his critically accliamed ‘Detoit Experiment’ which brought together jazz, funk, Motown, Hip Hop and electronic musicians. Carl Craig has reunited the original Tribe members on ‘Rebirth’ aswell as inviting new artists along the way; keyboardist Amp Fiddler, drummers Karriem Riggins and Gayelynn McKinney (Harold’s daughter!), bassists Ralphe Armstrong and many more. The results are amazing with Carl Craig adding his futuristic space-like synths to Phil Ranelin’s trombone-led classic ‘Vibes From The Tribe’, ‘Rebirth’ retains its original funk infused spritual jazz magic first created in the 1970′s whilst incorporating a fresh new sound! Gretchen Parlato – In a Dream

null

Gretchen Parlato’s voice is a thing of wonder. Striking the ideal balance between precision and flexibility, she is never predictable, blurring the lines between singer and instrumentalist as she takes a lyric–and at other times improvised flights of wordless fancy–to places it’s never before been. On In a Dream, her debut album for ObliqSound (released August 25, 2009), Parlato and her intuitive support team reinvent constantly, Parlato impeccably articulating in a voice so ethereal that the listener might very well feel that he or she is “in a dream.”

VA – Dramatic Funk Themes Vol. 1-2-3

One would never have imagined that an unexhausted supply of amazing funky, groovy compositions and hidden treasures from the 1970s would emerge from the vaults and shed light on the world over 30 years later.

“Dramatic Funk Themes” is a collection of such gems, all of which originate from the archives of the Themes International Music Library. Soundtracks for scenes which did not exist at the time – sometimes action-packed, dramatic or driving – such as a high speed car chase – or sometimes more laid-back and relaxed like crusing in a ragtop through the city. These are the scenes played out over a musical backdrop loaded with wah-wah guitars, deep basslines, rhodes, clavinets, analogue synthesizers, hammond organs, flutes, razor-sharp brass, groovy percussion and solid drum beats.

The Themes International Library was founded in 1973 as an offshoot to its parent company KPM by England’s elite studio session musicians Alan Parker, Alan Hawkshaw, Mike Moran and Barry Morgan.
The sounds and arrangements from the Themes Library were way ahead of their time, with their classic breaks and beats, and remain today on the most wanted lists of rare groove collectors, DJs and hip-hop producers alike. Also worth noting is that, in addition to the recordings made in London, some were put to tape in Munich with the support of none less than the brass section of the Max Greger Orchestra!

Themes International Library LPs were never available for purchase by the general public and were pressed in small quantities solely for the purposes of supplying music samples to the radio, television, film and production houses. Nowadays one has to dig very deeply in the pockets in order to snap up these treasures on auction sites such as Ebay. Depending on the album, prices can lie in the range 40 to 400 US Dollars (e.g. “The All American Powerhouse”).

Twit and Hodn are right in the center of Cologne’s breeding hip-hop scene, working with everybody from Fleur Earth and the Retrogott to Miles Bonny, Frank Nirtty and Planet Asia. Love Part 1
null

Loving executed third album by Build An Ark. Sounding like classic 70′s folk jazz! Well recommended! This record is their meditation on love – its varying forms and moods, its ecstatic and soothing powers. Build An Ark, under the production of Carlos Niño, have made an album which flows with a real range of volume and density, with arrangements and configurations contrasting against each other. The group has still kept their organic sound while adding several more layers, and charting a distinct progression from their previous two albums.

Quantic Presents The World’s Rarest Funk 45s Vol.1-2

Vol.1
null

Will Quantic is known around the world for his blistering stage performances with his band the Quantic Soul Orchestra. His ear for a good tune, and his feel for a good rhythm didn’t come from nowhere – you see Quantic has been collecting rare funk 45s for years, and in that time he has absorbed every drum kick, every horn line and every guitar lick into his very soul. It’s hard to make good music without drawing upon good influence, so along with Quantic, Jazzman have unearthed some of the very best and rarest funk 45s known (and unknown) to man. These records are pure quality, the exorbitant prices that collectors will pay for the originals lays testament to that, and will stand the test of time as a barometer of good ol’ funky music that is truly inspirational. It’s a shame that the original 45s are so rare, with only a few hundred being pressed in many cases, but it is possible that with such rarity comes excellence, distinction and quality. Many tracks were never before reissued and all songs are fully licensed and restored from original sources.

Vol.2

There’s few folks we’d trust with our ears more than Will “Quantic” Holland – an artist we’ve come to love for his own funky music in recent years, and a collector who’s always driven to dig for the rarest bits possible! This time around, he’s allied with the Jazzman Records crew, in a sweet CD presentation of 16 rare tracks, some previously reissued on vinyl 45s by the label – now finally brought together in one amazing package that’s filled with vintage photos, original label scans, a “rarity guide”, and detailed notes on every single tune! Even if you’ve managed to score some of the Jazzman vinyl reissues, this overstuffed package is worth grabbing up as well – and like the first volume, the collaboration of Quantic and Jazzman means that the compilation’s about as funky as funky can be.

Giovanni Mirabassi – Out of Track

null

“Giovanni is back again in trio. His programme this time is delicately put together, ranging from traditional tunes (Dear old Stockolm), to standards (Alone Together, Impressions, Just one of those things), committed songs once again (Here’s to you, Le chant des Partisans) in the same spirit as Avanti!, new versions of Piazzola (Vuelvo al Sur) or of a film soundtrack (Convite para la Vida) and finally several personal compositions or dedications (to Pieranunzi)…It is a neat alternation between different styles and atmospheres, a smooth balance between profusion and restraint, the triggering of nostalgia and effects of surprise (the Latin treatment of Impressions). Under this avalanche of references, we will recognize the pianist’s main inspiration… the elegance of his phrasing, his mastery and generosity … excellent rhythm section and a magnificent sound…”

Destruments – Shaped By The Sound

Destruments are Kelly Finnigan and Sean Willson with new member Adam Willis. Fortune and fate played equal parts in the formation, which gave birth to Destruments! It was a natural fit since they have a mutual love of Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk and Jazz music. Destruments key ingredient is fusing yesterday’s bugaloo with tomorrow’s beats, trying to connect the bridge between the past and the future.

Nicola Conte Albums!

Italian DJ/producer Nicola Conte’s loungey brand of acid jazz relies extensively on bossa nova, but is also heavily influenced by the swinging soundtracks of Italian films in the ’60s and ’70s, plus touches of ethnic music and easy listening kitsch reminiscent of Japan’s Pizzicato Five. Part of the loose-knit Fez collective of artsy acid jazz revivalists centered in the Italian town of Bari, Conte was a classically trained musician who instead moved into production and DJing, working with artists like the Paolo Achenza Trio, the Fez Combo, Balanco, Quintetto X, and the Intensive Jazz Sextet. Conte also masterminded the Schema label, which gave many of those artists a home and cultivated a trademark, distinctly Italian approach to acid jazz. As for his own recording career, Conte scored an underground hit with his first single, “Bossa Per Due,” which appeared on a variety of compilations and was licensed in the U.S. for an Acura commercial. Conte’s first album to be released in America was also titled Bossa Per Due, a slightly reconfigured version of the Italian Jet Sounds; it appeared on Thievery Corporation’s ESL (Eighteenth Street Lounge) label in the summer of 2001. The remix album Jet Sounds Revisited followed in late 2002. Two years later, Conte bowed on Blue Note’s French subsidiary with an assured jazz date, Other Directions. Quiet Stars and a slew of singles followed before Conte would return with Viagem in 2008.

Lone – Ecstasy & Friends

null

“Ecstasy & Friends”, Lone’s first full-length outing on Werk Discs, is a rejuvenating step back from the undeniable bass-driven style that has dominated the UK underground scene in recent years. Dreamy memories of Madlib are likely first impressions from these full-frontal productions, which come on like extensive workouts in melody and playful beats. Intriguing shades of post-club nostalgia pervade, underlined by warm, enveloping synths, while parallel sympathetic strands of muscular rhythm hit the mind and body with a refreshing and clean sound, willing and ready to go as hard in clubs as it does on the ears. This much-anticipated album fuses FlyLo-esque haziness and 808 drums and claps through a crate-digging production sound, which is as joy-reelingly bounce-laden as it is slaved-over and meticulous in its execution. Although inevitably grouped with the current wonky-hop movement of beat exploders, Lone’s output is immediately distinct from his contemporaries. His tunes stand out a mile as they strive to maintain groove and soul, switching effortlessly from the hip-house-in-space stylings of “Endlessly”, to a futurist R&B groove on “Waves Imagination”. Delving into every beat pocket, “Ecstacy & Friends” hot-spotlights Lone’s perpetual experimentation within hip hop’s perimeters.

Destruments – Bridge Through Time

null

Destruments are Kelly Finnigan and Sean Willson with new member Adam Willis. Fortune and fate played equal parts in the formation, which gave birth to Destruments! It was a natural fit since they have a mutual love of Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk and Jazz music. Destruments key ingredient is fusing yesterday’s bugaloo with tomorrow’s beats, trying to connect the bridge between the past and the future.

Kindred Spirits Ensemble – Love Is Supreme

null

Over two years in the making, the ‘Love Is Supreme’ CD is a testament to the timelessness of Coltrane’s music. In a world where mankind often seems to be his own worst enemy, Coltrane’s music, and in turn these interpretations by the Kindred Spirits Ensemble, shine like a beacon in troubled times.
Han Litz and Wiboud Burkens together with KC the Funkaholic form the core of the Kindred Spirits Ensemble, initiated especially to honour the legacy of Trane by performing new arrangements of some of his most iconic pieces. It has developed into a full blown tour, and delved deep into the spiritual jazz canon.
Coltrane believed that music had the power to change how people think, and this belief is crucial to the Kindred Spirits Ensemble. What started as a soul‐searching idea has become a cathartic journey of the spirit – both musically, and literally, as they toured around The Netherlands. This CD takes recordings from performances in Paradiso (on Coltrane’s 80th birthday), North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, Pure JazzFest in The Hague, and the Bacinol Delft, as they warmed the souls of audiences with versions of Naima, The Creator Has A Masterplan, and Prince Of Peace ‐ as well as Shining Liberation, a collaboration with MC Pete Philly from Pete Philly & Perquisite. It’s a document for a new generation – an offering of love and gratitude for the inspiration of the past and the revelations of the future. Giant steps indeed.

Cro-Magnon – Plays

null

A killer concept from Cro-Magnon – a set that has the contemporary combo taking on a host of funky classics from years back! The style here is wonderfully laidback – lots of Fender Rhodes spun out with long, lean, easygoing lines – mixed with a bit of piano at points too, all in the chunky modes we’ve always loved in Cro-Magnon’s music – but almost even better here than before, given the classic twist! Wicked stuff that almost single-handedly revives the CTI generation – with tracks that include “Remind Me”, “Tell Me A Bedtime Story”, “Red Clay”, “If You Want Me To Stay”, “The Sweetest Taboo”,and “Dancer”.

Leon King – The Digital Church

null

Leon King  is British talent championed by Tyler Askew and soon to release an EP on Tyler’s My Favourite Things imprint. If you’re pining for an original UK artist to further the soul sound after Lewis Taylor then Leon could well be your man…These seven tracks cradle the listener into his world and sound. “Remedy” is the opening jam on a hip-hop beat, which unfolds immediately strong soulful vibes. In the 2nd tune “Lizard-Lude”, Leon’s vocal talent is already on display, accompanied by gentle bass and guitar chords. “ You’ll Never Know” is a very fine piece of contemporary Soul, winking an eye to R’n’B. “Fazed” is a romantic, heartfelt wail. The E.P. ends with 2 rather deep, soulful grooves. “Knowingness”, is a very fine, production floating on a gentle breeze. Whereas, “The Digital Church” is a very harmonious, elevating song, some kind of testament of what’s to come out of Leon King’s music. We believe there’s a bright future ahead of him as long as he sticks to his weapons: Soul and Inspiration.

The Memphis Sounds – Ike’s Moods

null

Traffic Entertainment presents The Memphis Sounds Ike’s Moods, an all-instrumental collection of Isaac Hayes’ most well-known songs. In a similar vein as the Ultimate Breaks & Beats Instrumentals album, Ike’s Moods takes the best from Isaac Hayes’ catalog and transforms them into instrumental gems. Just as Hayes defined funk and soul in the 60s and 70s, the members of The Memphis Sound have carved out their own unique contemporary sound that not only attracts a younger generation to the genres, but also pleases fans of the sounds since their inception. Consisting of members from the Dap Kings, and Anti Balas, these instrumentalists have been a part of a movement of neo-wave funk and soul musicians, redefining the sound through projects with Mark Ronson (his most recent album Version) and Amy Winehouse (Back to Black, as well as touring with the singer); reworking classic instrumentals for the Wu-Tang Clan on a series of 7″ records and performing live alongside the clansmen; and other various live and studio recorded projects. Ike’s Moods contains such classics as “Shaft,” “Walk On By,” and “Look Of Love,” and aptly pays homage to the many moods and musical stylings of Hayes. An innovator of his time, Isaac Hayes is most known for his work on the music for Shaft whose theme song was made famous by its wah-wah guitar and multi-layered symphonic arrangement. Passing away in August 2008, Hayes left behind a career that spanned an extensive discography, filmography, and a handful of awards including three Grammy’s, an NAACP Image Award, and an Academy Award. Celebrate the career of this American music icon who defined the funk and soul genres with Ike’s Moods.
