Samon Kawamura – Translations

null

Born in Heilbronn, Germany in 1973 Kawamura is half German and half Japanese. He relocated to Japan a year later when his family moved to Tokyo. Through studying at a German school he kept a firm link with his birthplace and at 21 he returned to German soil with a sampler in hand to supply the world with his drum heavy sampling technique.

Fusing down tempo loops and inducing drums, the album is a journey into the deepest depths of sampling and arranging. As Kawamura exposes his love for dusty drums and chopping samples he manages to make even the most complicated edits sound simple. ‘Translations’ is an album that will travel with you, scoring the neon buzz of cityscapes and rolling hills alike, and these instrumentals are sure to become engrained into your consciousness after repeated spins. Black Feeling 1+2

Conceived by label owner Adrian Gibson and made into reality by The Bamboos Lance Ferguson, the Black Feeling project is all about taking it back to the source to the music that has inspired, instigated and accompanied many a musical journey over the years.
Following a sell out gig at the Jazz Cafe last year, band leader Lance rounded up a bunch of fellow minded musicians from the Aussie funk scene to collaborate on a covers album. Consisting of members of The Bamboos, Cookin On 3 Burners and many more guest musicians, the tracks are presented under pseudonyms to give the impression of an album you would find whilst digging in a Caribbean record shop or American thrift store.

40 Winks Albums!

40 Winks is an instrumental hip hop group made up of two producers – padmo’ and weedy – from Antwerp, Belgium.

40 Winks hit the scene in 2002, with a whole slew of laidback beats. Eager to share their sound with the world, they released a couple of albums independently. The attention they got from this, allowed them to build with people from around the world.
One of these independently released albums, More Than Loops, got reissued in Japan on Swamp Records, after that the ball kept rolling. On their first worldwide release, Extended Pleasure on Escapism Records (2005), they reached listeners well beyond the (instrumental) hip hop community with the song “melancholia”. After appearances on compilations, like Weapons of Hope on Little-D (2006), they got a chance to do their thing on the renowned label, Merck Records with Sound Puzzle (2007). All this led them back to Europe, where the German based Project: Mooncircle welcomed them with a spot on the compilation Heart on the right spot (2007) and a full album The Lucid Effect (2008). In 2009 they took some time off, doing solo stuff and remixes. In 2011 40 Winks is back with a double LP called It’s The Trip (2011) on Project: Mooncircle.

Piero Umiliani – Musica Elettronica Vol.1-2

Piero Umiliani is a chameleon! He is extremely talented composer and arranger of such versatility, that it is often difficult to recognise, that the same person is behind this superb selection of musical gems in this selection. Mutating through various styles, from Techno to free-form Jazz and beyond, this collection highlights his electronic work from 1969-79 utilising synthesizers and modern recording techniques. The result of his experimentation are so ambitiously imaginative, that they have far outstripped their date of origin and still apear futuristic over 20 years later!

Franco Ambrosetti + Uri Caine Trio – The Wind

null

Franco Ambrosetti is hailed among Europe’s most prolific jazz trumpeters and the winner of numerous awards. ‘The Wind’ presents the trumpeter in a new surrounding, accompanied by the current trio of pianist Uri Caine. For the first time in 10 years Ambrosetti is the only horn player on one of his albums. Concentrating on the trumpet and fuelled by the cooking energy of the trio, Ambrosetti’s playing radiates a power and youthfulness that betray his age, on tunes penned by himself, Caine, Sonny Rollins & Russ Freeman.

On this seven track ep you will find a broad perspective of sounds and flavours ranging from hip hop, street soul, beats to nu- jazz, with exellent vocal contributions by Mercury Waters (spitkickers.com), Blaktroniks and Nicole Hadfield. These cripsy beats are ripe with thumping funk and jazz influences, sample wizardry and daring shuffles. Composed with the help of unique sound plugins which were especially programmed to measure Comfort Fit’s needs and wishes, we think the chances aren’t bad that you’ll fall for the unique sound signature, bounce and elegance of this tight hip hop production. Like the best mixtapes this thing plays even strongly as a whole – no matter if it’s about classic jazz impressions like Miles of Smiles, scarily deep intergalactic grooves as in Astro Dancin´or the hip hop bomb State of Mind, all the tracks are locked together closely. The Never Look Back EP is more than just beat fodder for your next mixtape, “it’s a very personal diary of mine. I feel music is my natural form of expression, not words”, as Comfort Fit says. “It is very important for me to escape from the noise pollution of the cities and from the media hypes going on. I’d rather create my own”. This is the perfect masterpeice for the leftfield, opendminded dj´s and music conaisseurs.

Beat Dimensions Vol. 1-2

Volume 1
null

This compilation brings together some of the finest producers currently working in the field of forward thinking beat-crafting, such as Flying Lotus/Samiyam (here billed as Flyamsam), Aardvarck and Steve Spacek (Black Pocket) as well as less established names. It’s rare that you come across compilations with such a unified sound as this. From its very beginnings, the collection establishes a unique brand of J-Dilla-inspired beat production and soulful instrumentation. J Todd’s ‘The Night’ encapsulates this perfectly, it’s roughly trimmed samples making for an entirely humanised take on easy going electronic music. Further into the compilation, Tom Trago’s combination of drifting synth pads and plunging low-end rhythms proves to be a winning formula. Similarly, Hearin’ Aid’s ‘Figz’ comes with jazzy grooves toughened up by a rasping bassline and a brilliantly dirty snare sound. Finally, co-curator Jay Scarlett rounds off the compilation with one of its finest tracks, the Dr Dre-indebted ‘Love Music’. A meticulously compiled body of work this, which succeeds in setting established names and newbie producers next to each other without lapses in quality control.

Exciting and contrasting instrumentals from known producers such as Danny Breaks (Alphabet Zoo / Droppin’ Science), Dorian Concept (Kindred Spirits), Dimlite (All City), Ras G (Poobah) & Samiyam (Brain Feeder), Exile (Sound In Color), Fulgeance (Musique Large) + sick sounds from new kids Nosaj Thing (Alpha pup) Monopoly, Dizz1, Low Limit & Tiago, Devon and and and and and…Compiled by ‘beat connoisseurs’ Cinnaman & Jay Scarlett, the compilation touches on many different angles of ‘this music’. There’s introspective, tripped out and buzzing synth scapes, short popping electronic songs to full-on MPC party thumpers.

The Cinematic Orchestra Albums!

The Cinematic Orchestra is a British jazz and electronic outfit, created in the late 1990s by Jason Swinscoe. The band is signed to Ninja Tune independent record label. In addition to Swinscoe, the band includes PC (former DJ Food member Patrick Carpenter) on turntables, Luke Flowers (drums), Tom Chant (Saxophone), Nick Ramm (piano), Stuart McCallum (guitar) and Phil France (double bass). Former members include Jamie Coleman (trumpet), T. Daniel Howard (drums), Federico Ughi (drums) and Alex James (piano). The most recent addition to the band is Mancunian guitarist Stuart McCallum.

The Cinematic Orchestra’s sound, in both live and studio contexts, employs a live band which improvises along with a turntablist and electronic elements such as samples provided by Swinscoe. In their studio releases Swinscoe will often remix the live source material to produce a combination of live jazz improvisation with electronica, such that it is difficult to tell where the improvisation ends and the production begins.

Arts The Beatdoctor – Transitions

null

With his debut-EP Fragments (Unexpected, February 2006), Dutch beatsmith Arts the Beatdoctor showed his musical diversity with a collection of jazz-inflicted hiphop-tracks which were mostly characterized by their nightly atmosphere. With his full-length debut album Transitions he continues on this road in a truely original way. The album features 15 tracks, and is the product of 3 years of sampling, tweaking and composing. It stirs up a complex stew of emotions: melancholy being one of the most tongue-catching ingredients, supplemented by foreboding, a few tablespoons of tension and a few splashes of release. Comparisons to artists such as DJ Shadow, Krush and RJD2 spring to mind with his blend of atmospheric and cinematic hip hop beats. Apart from the aforementioned artists, Arts finds his inspiration in jazz and classical music: “What really gets to me are the harmonies used. There’s a lot of stuff that’s about ‘playing wrong notes, but making them sound right’. For that quality, jazz is a good starting point if you want to make music that’s surprising, exciting.” With featurings by Pete Philly, Skiggy Rapz and The Proov, Transitions became a very personal and introspective album which can’t be left unnoticed by anyone interested in true music.

Gonjasufi aka Sumach Albums!

San Diego-bred yoga instructor Sumach Ecks turned from rapping with the Masters of the Universe crew and DJing with Killowattz to focus on his solo endeavors under the name Artist. In 2006, around the time he relocated to Las Vegas to teach yoga, he crossed paths with Gaslamp Killer and Flying Lotus, and the three established a bond. Ecks, who had been making lo-fi psychedelic hip-hop for his own enjoyment, recruited the two beatmakers to produce songs for him, which he would later enhance with his distinctive raspy vocals. After Ecks released the 7″ singles “Ancestors” and “Kowboyz & Indians,” the full-length A Sufi and a Killer (Warp) was released in 2010.
