Bonobo Albums!

Simon Green was born and grew up in rural Hampshire, escaping to Brighton aged eighteen. There he fell into the jazz/hip hop/funk/soul scene centred around Rob Luis and nights like phonic:hoop. An accomplished musician as a teenager, he began producing his own tracks, pushing at the template established in the sweaty little venues studding the Lanes.

Over the last couple of years, Bonobo has become one of the premier artists on the Ninja Tune imprint and certainly one of the most listened to, with over 16 million plays recorded on LastFM. His combination of superb live shows and studio wizardry means that he is now perfectly placed to push on into a yet bigger league. With ‘Black Sands’, Bonobo has made the record to achieve it.

Roy Hargrove presents The RH Factor – Hard Groove

null

Most jazz-meets-hip-hop collaborations suffer from stiff beats plastered over abstract, high-minded solos. Not so with this collection from the ’70s-bred, Texan-born trumpet wunderkind. Sure, he knows the musical language and lineages of Clifford Brown and Miles Davis. But he’s also down with contemporaries like D’Angelo, Q-Tip, and homegirl Erykah Badu, who appear on this star-studded CD. Hargrove is backed by an in-the-pocket assemblage of jazz-honed phenoms featuring keyboardist Marc Cary, alto saxophonist Steve Coleman, bassist Meshell Ndegeocello, and flautist Karl Denson. They all put their grooves where their guts are, and the music evokes tinges of Donald Byrd’s back-in-the-day waxworks. D’Angelo’s down-home delivery lights up Funkadelic’s psychedelic slow drag, “I’ll Stay,” while ebullient Common kicks up the verbal virtuosity on “Common Free Style.” The Q-Tip/Erykah Badu cut “Poetry” could be a summer anthem. Throughout this tasty and tasteful project Roy Hargroove’s cool and clarion trumpet tones provide the right sonic seasoning for this dancing and delectable disc. –Eugene Holley, Jr.

Wayne Shorter Albums!

Though some will argue about whether Wayne Shorter’s primary impact on jazz has been as a composer or as a saxophonist, hardly anyone will dispute his overall importance as one of jazz’s leading figures over a long span of time. Though indebted to a great extent to John Coltrane, with whom he practiced in the mid-’50s while still an undergraduate, Shorter eventually developed his own more succinct manner on tenor sax, retaining the tough tone quality and intensity and in later years, adding an element of funk. On soprano, Shorter is almost another player entirely, his lovely tone shining like a light beam, his sensibilities attuned more to lyrical thoughts, his choice of notes becoming more spare as his career unfolded. Shorter’s influence as a player, stemming mainly from his achievements in the 1960s and ’70s, has been tremendous upon the neo-bop brigade who emerged in the early ’80s, most notably Branford Marsalis. As a composer, he is best known for carefully conceived, complex, long-limbed, endlessly winding tunes, many of which have become jazz standards yet have spawned few imitators.

Enrico Pieranunzi – Fellini Jazz

null

Italian pianist, composer, and arranger Enrico Pieranunzi has done something delightful and enlightening on Fellini Jazz: he has gathered together some of the brightest lights in American jazz — all of whom who have a serious affinity for European music — and formed a quintet for creatively interpreting theme music from the director’s films. While most of the themes here were composed by Nino Rota, there are two original pieces that extrapolate from various melodic and harmonic schema in Rota’s work. All of the music here, with the exception of the themes from Amarcord and City of Women (the latter composed by Luis Bacalov), comes from Fellini’s films of the 1950s. There is a reason for this. The musical element in Rota’s scores from these films was, at the very least, informed by the spirit of jazz. Using the great American musicians who came of age during the great Yankee discovery of Fellini’s movies is a brilliant touch, as they become “actors” themselves in this musical drama. Not being Italian, and not being regular players of Rota’s scores, they look at Pieranunzi’s adaptations with a non-literal, gauzy, nearly surrealist view. And while some would argue that Pieranunzi is not on the same level musically with his collaborators as a pianist, and perhaps someone like Brad Mehldau or Fred Hersch might have been a better choice, they’d be wrong. Pieranunzi — specifically because he brings the great Italian jazz tradition, with its deep reliance on lyricism and harmonic interplay, to the mix — is the only player who could have pulled off the gig. This is a beautifully, movingly wrought album that is indeed a jazz date first, but one that is also not so far removed from the music of Fellini’s cinema because of its reliance on impression, subtlety, grace, warm humor, and, of course, elegance. Two sets of liner notes accompany the set, one by Pieranunzi about the session and one from Ira Gitler about the films and Pieranunzi. Fantastic and breathtaking.

The Crusaders Albums!

In 1961, four fellows from Houston transplanted themselves to Los Angeles and added more distinctly bluesy elements to the soul jazz style with an ear-grabbing album called The Freedom Sound on the Pacific Jazz label. The band, which had been known in turn as the Swingsters, the Modern Jazz Sextet, and the Nighthawks, was now named the Jazz Crusaders. Its four co-leaders were trombonist Wayne Henderson, tenor saxophonist (and occasional bassist) Wilton Felder, pianist Joe Sample, and drummer Nesbert “Stix” Hooper.

The Jazz Crusaders sound caught on big time, and their subsequent Pacific Jazz albums rewarded them with a good deal of exposure. The band performed regularly and got plenty of airplay. One of its signature pieces, the rollickingly fast “Young Rabbits,” was even used as the musical background for a Ford Mustang TV commercial.

But as times changed, so did the Jazz Crusaders. In the late Sixties, they placed such popular numbers as the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby” and “Get Back” in their repertoire, and firm backbeats began to bolster many a selection. By 1971, they decided that the word “jazz” kept them from attracting a wider listener base, and so they emerged anew with The Crusaders, Vol. 1 (Chisa), an album that openly infused jazz with pop, soul, and r&b elements.

If the Jazz Crusaders had achieved some degree of popularity, it was nothing like the crossover success that greeted the Crusaders. Such albums as Scratch, Southern Comfort, Chain Reaction, Those Southern Knights, Free as the Wind, Images, Street Life, and Royal Jam (recorded variously for the Chisa, ABC Blue Thumb, and MCA labels) sold well and brought in a deluge of new fans. Street Life’s title track provided the Crusaders with a Billboard top forty hit, reaching no. 36 in 1979.

The Crusaders’ popularity started to fade in the early Eighties, prompted by Henderson’s departure. Hooper then left as well, and by the early Nineties Sample and Felder had disbanded the group. A few years later, Henderson and Felder began performing together, first as the New Crusaders and, more recently, as the Jazz Crusaders.

TM Juke – Maps From The Wilderness

null

A cohesion of beautiful melodies and rugged beats, “Maps from the Wilderness” is an accomplished album that should earn TM Juke the same accolades as fellow Tru Thoughts album acts Quantic, Jon Kennedy and Bonobo (who now record for Grand Central and Ninja Tune respectively). Having recorded various songs for Tru Thoughts under the guise of Al Stylus, TM Juke took it upon himself to adopt a name suitable for styles and sounds he wished to explore with this album. The styles are varied and they seem to span the full orchestral range; rolling timpani drums underpin hazy beats whilst delicate guitars flitter amongst intricate strings. As a producer, TM Juke draws on funk, soul, hip-hop and jazz influences, but adds a greater depth and maturity with immaculate arrangements that belie his twenty three years and give “Maps of the Wilderness” a strikingly original yet strangely familiar feel.

Urbs & Cutex – Peace Talks

null

Paul Nawrata and David Schuller, better known as Urbs & Cutex, Urbs & Cutex are two scientists on their own mission, leaving trends and hypes behind, to focus on what’s most important: the music. “Peace Talks!” takes the listener on a journey, discovering a whole new sound universe. Deeply rooted in mid 90´s Hip Hop, their sound has matured since “Breaks of Dawn”. While their minimalistic debut was more of a DJ Tool (still being a pure pleasure for homelistening sessions) the “Peace Talks” tracks are more structured, reminding us of classical songwriting. Paul and David are taking us back into a time when MPC 60´s and SP 1200´s were the instruments of choice, before the 303´s and Triton´s took over Hip Hop. Back into a time when rap records consisted of loops, before soul was replaced by cold electronic bleep sounds and being ‘jiggy’ was all that. But don’t be mistaken, Urbs & Cutex are not retro or strictly Hip Hop. These guys have the gift to capture the “mid 90´s New York flavour” and combine it with the state of the art sound that we all love listening to nowadaysIt’s all about the magic of a loop!

The Cinematic Orchestra Albums!

The Cinematic Orchestra is a British jazz and electronic outfit, created in the late 1990s by Jason Swinscoe. The band is signed to Ninja Tune independent record label. In addition to Swinscoe, the band includes PC (former DJ Food member Patrick Carpenter) on turntables, Luke Flowers (drums), Tom Chant (Saxophone), Nick Ramm (piano), Stuart McCallum (guitar) and Phil France (double bass). Former members include Jamie Coleman (trumpet), T. Daniel Howard (drums), Federico Ughi (drums) and Alex James (piano). The most recent addition to the band is Mancunian guitarist Stuart McCallum.

The Cinematic Orchestra’s sound, in both live and studio contexts, employs a live band which improvises along with a turntablist and electronic elements such as samples provided by Swinscoe. In their studio releases Swinscoe will often remix the live source material to produce a combination of live jazz improvisation with electronica, such that it is difficult to tell where the improvisation ends and the production begins.

Alien Army – The End

null

Alien Army was a group formed by 11 italian DJ (Skizo, Zak, Tayone, Inesha, John Type 10, Metz, Gruff, Stile, Double S, Stanley, Popsta).
The concept of the group was to add different styles, combined with original thoughts, unified under one roof, in the hands of the most prepared and talented turntablists in Italy. Creativity is at the base of the group. Consistant training, competivness and musical backgrounds form an untouchable alliance for the future of worldwide turntablizm. Alien Army is an orchestral sextet based on turntables, mixers and effects units. The intent is to develop the concept of turntablizm in its purest form to bombard untried and unvisited realms on the five percent hip hop culture putting Italy first place in the worldwide turntable culture.

North West Metropolis – Expressions EP

null

No more digging in the crates necessary! The well-recieved Expressions EP by North West Metropolis is finally available on CD as well. This first release of North West Metropolis, a collective of producers Perquisite, Omar Rey and Ane features the mc’s Cee Major, Pete Philly and Kain Slim, singer Delicate Swing and saxophonist Bart Sur. Innovating Hip Hop is the keyword over here. Cee Major (the Proov), Pete Philly (ex-Nicotine) and Kain Slim take things up to another level over the sometimes slumbering minimalistic and then again innovating sound of the North West Metropolis beats. The cd release is supported by a video of ‘Self-Reflection’ which features Pete Philly.

DJ Dusk's Root Down Soundclash

null

Early in 2001 the Los Angeles club Root Down put on their first of a three part series called “Sound Clash,” organized & hosted by DJ Dusk. Based on the reggae sound system competitions, this was a hip-hop event – in this case featuring Madlib and Cut Chemist – going head to head, beat for beat for respect in front of a packed club.

Madlib was then unknown to many in the crowd, and Cut Chemist was at the height of his success with Jurassic 5. Each of the tracks had never been released. Each of the three rounds saw the excitement rise. The last round unleashed a partisan celebration from the captivated crowd.

Approximately a year later, the Root Down organized the round two, featuring Will.I.Am and Thes One. The drama and controversy of Round Two arose from the huge aesthetic differences on display between the “combatants.” The theatrics of the evening – clothes being taken off, ludicrous names and costumes – made the night a talking point in Los Angeles to this day. And Will.I.Am wasn’t a multi-platinum artist yet!

The last battle featured Oh No and Exile in 2003. With a relatively dignified display by the youngest pairing of the three, they closed the series with good music and much respect.

Mochilla’s Eric Coleman and B+ filmed all three events, but never had plans to release this as a DVD. However, since the tragic passing of DJ Dusk in 2006 they felt it was important to honor his legacy and share his gifts. This is for him, no edits, no overdubs, no interruptions… just raw hip-hop at its most exciting: vital and real.

Mario Pavone – Orange

null

Bassist/composer/bandleader Mario Pavone has a stellar reputation among fans of avant-garde jazz, particularly given his years as bassist for the Thomas Chapin Trio. But Pavone’s agreeable music should hold appeal for listeners of both inside and outside persuasions, from those enamored of hard bop and post-bop through to those favoring more open-ended styles of jazz exploration. Orange, released on the Playscape label during fall 2003, features Pavone’s trio with regular collaborator, pianist Peter Madsen, and now with Michigan transplant Gerald Cleaver in the drummer’s chair, augmented by the killer chops of trumpeter Steven Bernstein and tenor saxophonist Tony Malaby on five tracks. Trumpeter Bernstein energizes the quintet tracks, three of which he arranged. The Sex Mobster invites comparison here to such acclaimed New York trumpet compatriots as Dave Douglas and Herb Robertson, unleashing flurries of notes on “Drop Op” and “Goorootoo,” and ending his lines with punchy exclamation points on “Blue Rex,” the opening number that bops, swings, and struts, setting a strong pace that doesn’t let up for the rest of the disc. The spirit of Chapin continues to imbue Pavone’s work, explicitly on the lengthy “Sky Tango,” which begins ruminatively, but soon picks up steam and rhythmically opens, skirting free jazz territories and providing both Malaby and Madsen opportunities to soar. And Cleaver proves his ability to bond with a bassist through the twists and turns of arrangements that manage somehow to be simultaneously knotty and swinging. Echoes of the past come together movingly on “Burnt Sweet Orange,” as Bernstein and Malaby float bluesy call-and-response statements that lead into a loose stuttering vamp from the core trio, suggesting that the ghost of Mingus could very well be hovering over the proceedings along with Chapin. But ultimately, this disc belongs to Pavone, of course, as the composer and deep force who drives the music forward. Orange deserves space on the shelf next to classic Blue Note, Prestige, and Riverside releases, as well as jazz discs of more recent vintage from New World, Tzadik, and Knitting Factory, not to mention Playscape.
