McCoy Tyner – Expansions

null

Of pianist McCoy Tyner’s seven Blue Note albums of the 1967-1970 period, Expansions is the most definitive. Tyner’s group (comprised of trumpeter Woody Shaw, altoist Gary Bartz, tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter on cello, bassist Herbie Lewis, and drummer Freddie Waits) is particularly strong, the compositions (four Tyner originals plus Calvin Massey’s “I Thought I’d Let You Know”) are challenging, and the musicians seem quite inspired by each other’s presence. The stimulating music falls between advanced hard bop and the avant-garde, pushing and pulling at the boundaries of modern mainstream jazz. (allmusic.com)

Thelonious Monk – Underground

null

Underground was recorded in 1967, about 20 years into the career of this wholly distinctive and unorthodox pianist-composer. Whenever the understated saxophone talents of Charlie Rouse accompany Thelonious Monk, one is assured of an invigorating set of music–and this collection is no exception. Supported by Larry Gales on bass and the inimitable Ben Riley on drums, Monk and Rouse elaborate on immortal compositions like “Ugly Beauty.” On “In Walked Bud,” the quartet is joined by vocalist Jon Hendricks. With jagged themes and unusual variations of meter and key, Underground showcases an aging Monk’s still-brilliant eccentricity on the piano. A good bit looser than much of Monk’s earlier work, he and Rouse infuse this date with their tag-team humor and unrelenting musical enthusiasm. –Mitch Myers

Lou Donaldson – The Midnight Creeper

null

As he delved deeper into commercial soul-jazz and jazz-funk, Lou Donaldson became better at it. While lacking the bite of his hard bop improvisations or the hard-swinging funk of Alligator Bogaloo, Midnight Creeper succeeds where its predecessor, Mr. Shing-A-Ling failed: it offers a thoroughly enjoyable set of grooving, funky soul-jazz. The five songs — including two originals by Donaldson and one each by Lonnie Smith (who also plays organ on the record), Teddy Vann, and Harold Ousley — aren’t particularly distinguished, but the vibe is important, not the material. And the band — Donaldson, Smith, trumpeter Blue Mitchell, guitarist George Benson, and drummer Leo Morris — strikes the right note, turning in a fluid, friendly collection of bluesy funk vamps. Donaldson could frequently sound stilted on his commercial soul-jazz dates, but that’s not the case with Midnight Creeper. He rarely was quite as loose on his late-’60s/early-’70s records as he is here, and that’s what makes Midnight Creeper a keeper.

Personnel: Lou Donaldson (alto saxophone); Blue Mitchell (trumpet); Lonnie Smith (organ); George Benson (guitar); Idris Muhammad (drums).

The Howard Roberts Quartet – Out Of Sight

null

Description: In this decade, everything is happening. The Music scene is a fertility rite in full eruption. One Of the dependably liveliest excitements is Howard Roberts. As guitarist, he possesses the consummate artistry of the virtuoso, and he is totally hip to what’s happening. As Head man of the Howard Roberts Quartet, he drivers a group that showers wit and ideas like a comet sheds sparks. Howard’s “Out Of sight” has a different sound. It is the contemporary Roberts playing the new, contemporary, good music. It is also something more. As closely as words can indicate it, here are the elements: the Quartet, hip, creative, often humorous, and playing with magnificent ease. Bright splashes of brass, and some out-of-sight percussion. Plus, in keeping with today’s sound-seeking. a little secretic electronic “experimentation” – tasteful, unobtrusive, but intriguing and effective. Result: a fresh slant on the “In” sound… the “In” Sound with class, highlighting the crispness, the non-stop virtuosity, the earthy funk of the Howard Roberts Guitar.

Lee Morgan – Taru

null

By the time of this 1968 session, the quintessential hard-bop trumpeter Lee Morgan, was stretching in several directions at once, pushing into freer forms and also pressing the crossover funk market that he had tapped so brilliantly with The Sidewinder. The different directions are apparent in the sidemen. Bennie Maupin made few recordings in the period, but he was among the most distinctive avant-garde tenor saxophonists, with a blunt, Rollins-inspired approach that would eventually come to the fore on Miles Davis’s Bitches Brew and with Herbie and the Headhunters. Guitarist George Benson explores the funkier side of Wes Montgomery’s style, while the rhythm section of pianist John Hicks, bassist Reggie Workman, and Billy Higgins is perfect for the potent mix of modal, hard-bop, and funk approaches that Morgan was pulling together. The trumpeter plays with his usual intensity, displaying quick musical wits and a sound that’s almost menacing.

Personnel: Lee Morgan (trumpet); Bennie Maupin (tenor saxophone); John Hicks (piano); George Benson (Guitar); Reggie Workman (Bass); Billy Higgins (drums).

Bobby Hutcherson – Patterns

null

All of Bobby Hutcherson’s late ’60s Blue Note dates are excellent examples of superior ensemble interaction coupled with fascinating compositions. 1968′s Patterns features the vibraphonist leading a quintet capable of tremendous textural changes and near-classical sophistication. The group offers its interpretation of six spellbinding pieces (plus one extra take of the title track), most of which were composed by drummer Joe Chambers. On this must-have session Stanley Cowell (piano), Reggie Workman (bass) and saxophonist James Spaulding (who also adds beautiful colors on flute) round out the group.

Chick Corea – Now He Sings, Now He Sobs

null

Although Chick Corea’s long career has garnered many stellar recordings, one of the best of the best is the phenomenal Now He Sings, Now He Sobs. A trio session with bassist Miroslav Vitous and drummer Roy Haynes, this is the disc that cemented Corea’s place in the jazz firmament as a pianist of incomparable skill. His percussive touch, fluid lines, and uniquely inventive approach to improvisation are all in full display.

Corea, Vitous, and Haynes greatly expand the scope of the piano trio as they pull and stretch the concept of group interaction to an entirely new plateau. From the bouncing excitement of Corea’s “Matrix” to the dark blaze of the burning “Step-What Was,” the trio moves as one, constantly arcing into new directions at every turn. Haynes, the elder of the three, is in particularly energetic form, providing a constant fire underneath the churning piano of Corea. Standout cuts include a mesmerizing interpretation of the classic “My One and Only Love,” Corea’s waltzing “Windows,” and the free-form Corea/Vitous duet “Gemini.”

Luis Bacalov – Rebus

null

An excellent mod soundtrack to this wild film from 1968, starring Ann Margret and Laurence Harvey, and featuring music by the Italian composer Luis Bacalov! Bacalov’s work these days is pretty sedate – but back in the 60s, he could really come up with a groovy batch of tracks when he wanted to, and on this one, he definitely wanted to! The tracks have great mod drums, electric bass, and plenty of organ – plus occasional subtler instrumentation – and the album also features Ann Margaret singing the song “Take a Chance”, a driving dancing number that ranks with her best soundtrack performances from the 60s! Other tracks include “Rebus”, “Suddenly The Rain”, and many different “Rebus” sequences.

The Crusaders Albums!

In 1961, four fellows from Houston transplanted themselves to Los Angeles and added more distinctly bluesy elements to the soul jazz style with an ear-grabbing album called The Freedom Sound on the Pacific Jazz label. The band, which had been known in turn as the Swingsters, the Modern Jazz Sextet, and the Nighthawks, was now named the Jazz Crusaders. Its four co-leaders were trombonist Wayne Henderson, tenor saxophonist (and occasional bassist) Wilton Felder, pianist Joe Sample, and drummer Nesbert “Stix” Hooper.

The Jazz Crusaders sound caught on big time, and their subsequent Pacific Jazz albums rewarded them with a good deal of exposure. The band performed regularly and got plenty of airplay. One of its signature pieces, the rollickingly fast “Young Rabbits,” was even used as the musical background for a Ford Mustang TV commercial.

But as times changed, so did the Jazz Crusaders. In the late Sixties, they placed such popular numbers as the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby” and “Get Back” in their repertoire, and firm backbeats began to bolster many a selection. By 1971, they decided that the word “jazz” kept them from attracting a wider listener base, and so they emerged anew with The Crusaders, Vol. 1 (Chisa), an album that openly infused jazz with pop, soul, and r&b elements.

If the Jazz Crusaders had achieved some degree of popularity, it was nothing like the crossover success that greeted the Crusaders. Such albums as Scratch, Southern Comfort, Chain Reaction, Those Southern Knights, Free as the Wind, Images, Street Life, and Royal Jam (recorded variously for the Chisa, ABC Blue Thumb, and MCA labels) sold well and brought in a deluge of new fans. Street Life’s title track provided the Crusaders with a Billboard top forty hit, reaching no. 36 in 1979.

The Crusaders’ popularity started to fade in the early Eighties, prompted by Henderson’s departure. Hooper then left as well, and by the early Nineties Sample and Felder had disbanded the group. A few years later, Henderson and Felder began performing together, first as the New Crusaders and, more recently, as the Jazz Crusaders.

Roberto Pregadio & Romano Mussolini – Satanik

null

A wonderful soundtrack penned by the team of Roberto Pregadio and Romano Mussolini, who teamed up a few years before on the classic Kriminal! The style here is even more open and creative than before – sometimes straight jazz, in a mode that rivals the best American soundtracks of its type from the mid 60s – but at other times, the styles get a bit weirder – often thanks to a thin-sounding guitar that kind of wiggles and wobbles into the mix, shaking things up with a mod sort of edge. Other solo instrumentation includes trumpet, flute, accordion, and piano – the latter of which is played by either Mussolini or Pregadio, pulled together as a complete soundtrack for the first time ever!

One of the two quartet sessions that Ornette cut for Blue Note in the late 60s – and tight mature work like the New York Is Now sides, recorded in the company of Dewey Redman and the Coltrane rhythm section of Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones, which offers a contrasting perspective to most of the preceding Coleman groups. Ornette plays alto and trumpet, as he was doing around that time, and Redman’s playing is amongst his finest on record. Miles Davis Albums!

Miles Dewey Davis III (May 26, 1926 – September 28, 1991) was an American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, and composer.

Widely considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, Miles Davis was, with his musical groups, at the forefront of several major developments in jazz music, including bebop, cool jazz, hard bop, modal jazz, and jazz fusion. Many well-known musicians rose to prominence as members of Davis’ ensembles, including saxophonists Gerry Mulligan, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, George Coleman, Wayne Shorter, and Kenny Garrett; trombonist J. J. Johnson; pianists Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and Keith Jarrett; guitarists John McLaughlin, John Scofield and Mike Stern; bassists Paul Chambers, Ron Carter, and Dave Holland; and drummers Tony Williams, Billy Cobham and Jack DeJohnette.

On October 7, 2008, his album Kind of Blue, released in 1959, received its fourth platinum certification from the RIAA, signifying sales of 4 million copies. Miles Davis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. Davis was noted as “one of the key figures in the history of jazz”.

On November 5, 2009, Rep. John Conyers of Michigan sponsored a measure in the US House of Representatives to recognize and commemorate the album Kind of Blue on its 50th anniversary. The measure also affirms jazz as a national treasure and “encourages the United States government to preserve and advance the art form of jazz music.” It passed, unanimously, with a vote of 409–0 on December 15, 2009.

Lonnie Smith – Think!

null

Think!, organist Lonnie Smith’s 1968 sophomore effort for Blue Note, is easily one of the strongest dates the Hammond B-3 master would produce for the label. Featuring a stellar group of musicians including trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor saxophonist David Newman, guitarist Melvin Sparks, and drummer Marion Booker, Jr., as well as a three-member Afro-Latin percussion unit led by Henry “Pucho” Brown, Think! is a perfect mix of funky soul and forward-thinking jazz. Kicking things off with Hugh Masekela’s instantly memorable “Son of Ice Bag,” both Sparks and Newman take searching funk-flow solos while Morgan seems to be remembering a certain Masekela lick he dug. Similarly expansive is the epic and frenetic Afro bliss-out “The Call of the Wild,” which finds Newman in a heady, bluesy organ jam freak-out set against “Pucho” Brown’s torrid Latin rhythms and Sparks’ nasty repeto-funk guitar riff. By the time you get to the title track and realize “Oh, it’s that “Think,” all you can do is laugh at the utter hipness of it all and take pleasure in the notion that the album is only half over.

Gabor Szabo – Dreams

null

Gabor Szabo was one of the most original guitarists to emerge in the 1960s, mixing his Hungarian folk music heritage with a deep love of jazz and crafting a distinctive, largely self-taught sound. From the opening chords of ‘Galatea’s Guitar’, it is clear this is no an ordinary Jazz album. Through the seven pieces here, the guitar is naturally at the forefront, yet the backing group is anything but secondary. For this album, his quintet (featuring guitar ace Jimmy Stewart) is augmented by Gary McFarland’s fine string arrangements. The set features a nice selection of originals and pop covers. The warm tones and Eastern influences of ‘Dreams’ makes this one of Gabor Szabo’s best albums.
