Oh No – Dr. No’s Kali Tornado Funk

null

When cut loose on the Rudy Ray Moore/Dolemite catalog to put together the release that came to be known as OhNoMite, Oh No was like the clichéd kid in a candy store. With so much material to pull from it was inevitable that some cuts couldn’t be squeezed into the final OhNoMite project, some would with different mixes and some were never fully realized. Oh No turned this material over to his alter-ego, Dr. No, for the further finishing touches for this all instrumental outting. The result is contained here on Dr. No’s Kali Tornado Funk. Coming at you with fists flying this full length features instrumentals and alternate mixes from the OhNoMite record, thoroughly funk filled blasts that didn’t find their way into the final OhNoMite project and much more. Kali Tornado Funk is the total experience; the Doctor’s prescription for those whose asses just don’t move enough, a recommended treatment for those whose ailment is a lack of soul. Side effects include having a thoroughly good time and in rare instances a desire to perform karate moves.

As Dolemite would say “Can you dig it?” We’re sure you can.

Ronnie Laws – Fever

null

When Ronnie Laws first started recording as a leader in 1975, one of the saxman’s strongest allies was Wayne Henderson. That trombonist and founding member of the Crusaders (originally the Jazz Crusaders) was an expert when it came to combining the accessibility of soul and funk with the freedom of jazz, and his guidance proved to be a definite asset when he produced early Laws albums like Pressure Sensitive (1975) and Fever (1976). The popular Grover Washington, Jr. was a strong influence on Laws, whose appreciation of Mr. Magic asserts itself on everything from the funky “Let’s Keep It Together” and the gritty “Captain Midnight” to Bobby Lyle’s alluring “Night Breeze.” This isn’t to say that Laws was a Washington clone, or that he unaware of other soul-jazz saxmen like Eddie Harris and David “Fathead” Newman. Laws, in fact, was quite recognizable himself on both tenor and soprano. One tune that definitely isn’t in the soul-jazz vein is “From Ronnie with Love,” an angular, cerebral post-bop offering that isn’t unlike something Jackie McLean would do. Because Laws has recorded so many throwaways, one has to approach his catalog with caution; but rest assured that Fever puts his talent to work instead of wasting it. ~ Alex Henderson

Roy Ayers Ubiquity – He’s Coming

null

One of the rarest and greatest Roy Ayers albums of all time – the sly, funky and spiritual masterpiece He’s Coming from 1971 – really the beginning of the funk years from Roy Ayers Ubiquity! This one’s a totally solid mix of soulful jazz, jazzy soul and righteous funk – and it’s straight up wonderful all the way through – with a groove that’s hugely influential to say the least! Includes the amazing track “We Live In Brooklyn Baby”, which has a slow sample bassline in the intro that’s just incredible – plus groovy cuts like the spiritual funk classic Jesus Christ Superstar “He’s a Superstar”, “He’s Coming”, and “Sweet Tears”. The lineup includes Sonny Fortune on soprano sax and flute and Billy Cobham drums and percussion, and the record’s co-arranged by Harry Whitaker, who’s also on keys and vocals – with other tracks include “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother”, “Ain’t Got Time”, “I Don’t Know How To Love Him”, “Sweet Butterfly Of Love” and “Fire Weaver”. Amazing stuff, really a beautiful encapsulation of Roy Ayers in peak form! (dustygroove.com)

Christian Scott – Christian aTunde Adjuah

null

Edison Award winning trumpeter-composer-producer-bandleader Christian Scott releases his compelling new album, Christian aTunde Adjuah. The follow-up to his critically-acclaimed Yesterday You Said Tomorrow is an inspired and provocative two-disc, 23-track collection. With the artist s trumpet at the heart of most of the tunes, the album features reflective ballads, light and dreamy soundscapes, guitar-edged and rock-inflected cookers, trumpet ecstasies as well as clarion calls and anguished wails. A tour de force masterwork, Christian aTunde Adjuah opens a wide window on Scott s present as well as his past (especially in reaction to the jazz trads complaining about his breaking free from the jazz standard) and his auspicious creative future. In his liners, Scott writes that the listener will hear on the album a stretching of jazz, not a replacement. That is what I hope younger people will be able to take away from it as well the idea that innovation should never be regarded as a problem in artistic practice, that one should always be aware of what has come before, and finally, that criticisms shouldn t evoke paralysis, [but] should inspire action.

Chet Baker – She Was Too Good To Me

null

Besides being a great recording, this one also has some historical significance, as it is viewed by many as Chet’s “comeback” album. Although Baker recorded in the late sixties, they were really dreadful commercial albums. This is the first significant recording Chet made since the ’65 Prestige sessions. It also marks the beginning of a very successful association with Creed Taylor and CTI Records. Chet recorded some of best work for CTI in the mid-to-late 1970′s. Bob James’ electric piano and some strings (just the right amount) give this CD a unique flavor. Chet sings several ballads, and this is where you start to hear the change in his voice. It’s still soft and sincere, but it is lower and starting to show the ravishes of cigarettes and drugs. (chetbakertribute.com)

Joe Farrell – Outback

null

A 1972 Grammy nominee for Best Jazz Performance by a Group, Joe Farrell’s Outback is “brilliant a stunner,” writes Allmusic.com, “an album that is at least as inspired as anything Farrell ever recorded, and perhaps more so.” Joined here by Chick Corea, Elvin Jones and Airto, Farrell “pushes the envelope not only of his own previous conceptualism in jazz, but the CTI label’s envelope as well. For starters, this is not a funk, soul, or fusion date, but an adventurous, spacy tightrope-walking exercise between open-ended composition and improvisation. That said, there is plenty of soul in the playing, not only by Farrell, but by all the players.

The Shaolin Afronauts – Quest Under Capricorn

null

2011′s debut album from The Shaolin Afronauts ‘Flight Of The Ancients’ was a critical and commercial success story, lauded as a truly original blend of the sounds of 1970′s West Africa, Ethiopia and the pioneering and progressive avant-garde jazz artists of the same period. Now in 2012, The Shaolin Afronauts continue their musical journey with the follow up album ‘Quest Under Capricorn’ and the groups musical progression is apparent from the outset. Quest Under Capricorn marks a development and progression of The Shaolin Afronauts sound, which evokes the spirit of the mighty Sun Ra, Mulatu Astatke, Fela Kuti, John Coltrane and a host of other free thinking musical pioneers and explorers… and sets the group well apart from the glut of less explorative and imaginative groups of a similar ilk. The Shaolin Afronauts return with a highly original sound made up of classic influences, but tailor made for the 21st century.

Shawn Lee – Synthesizers In Space

null

Driven by his discovery of a vintage ‘mystery-box instrument to create a diverse, densely layered collection of Fatboy Slim hooks, T. Rex rockers, built on real drums, swathed in a crusty, magnetic sound.

“For me, being creative is a natural bodily function, like breathing and eating,” Shawn Lee says from his London studio as he reflects on the whirlwind effort and inspiration he experienced in developing his latest album, Synthesizers in Space. It began at a music store called Switched On in Austin, TX and the discovery of a vintage “mystery-box” instrument hidden amongst the old synths and organs that created sounds and textures unlike anything currently in his sonic arsenal.

The result was a focused attack in the studio, creating a set of 11 new tracks based around the “mystery box”, and a range of psychedelic grooves. Synthesizers in Space is a diverse, densely layered collection from a musician known for his ability to blend sunny melodies, smoky grooves and propulsive rhythms into his own inimitable sound.
