Dianne Reeves – I Remember

null

Dianne Reeves has always had the ability to reach the top of her field, but she has long seemed unable to make up her mind between jazz, R&B, world music, and pop. This Blue Note disc fortunately finds her mostly sticking to jazz and in consistently superb form. Reeves’ treatments of such numbers as “Afro Blue” (which is particularly memorable), “Love for Sale,” “Softly As in a Morning Sunrise,” “How High the Moon,” and McCoy Tyner’s “You Taught My Heart to Sing” all border on the classic. Joined by such illustrious sidemen as pianists Billy Childs, Mulgrew Miller, and Donald Brown; bassists Charnett Moffett and Chris Severin; and drummers Billy Kilson and Marvin “Smitty” Smith, plus guest appearances by vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, altoist Greg Osby, and guitarist Kevin Eubanks, Reeves sounds inspired by the company. If only she would stick to this direction. Highly recommended. (cduniverse)

Hubert Laws – Morning Star

null

Flutist Hubert Laws is joined by a large string orchestra on this set, which was arranged and conducted by Don Sebesky. Keyboardist Bob James is in the supporting cast, and some unnecessary background vocalists (including Debra and Eloise Laws) are employed on some of the numbers, but the focus is mostly on Laws’ brilliant and appealing flute. Highlights include “Let Her Go,” “Where Is the Love,” and, particularly, “Amazing Grace.” The results are pleasing, if not quite essential.

Personnel: Hubert Laws (flute, alto flute, piccolo); Debra Laws, Eloise Laws, Lani Groves, Tasha Thomas (vocals); John Tropea (guitar); Gloria Agostini (harp); Elliot Rosoff, David Nadien, Gene Orloff, Irving Spice, Harry Cykman, Max Ellen, Paul Gershman, Emanuel Green, Harry Lookofsky (violin); Lucien Schmit, George Koutzen, Charles McCracken (cello); Romeo Penque (flute, alto flute, piccolo, English horn); Phil Bodner (flute, alto flute, clarinet); Jack Knitzer (bassoon); Alan Rubin, Marvin Stamm (trumpet, flugelhorn); James Buffington (French horn); Garnett Brown (trombone); Bob James (electric piano); Dave Friedman (vibraphone, percussion); Billy Cobham (drums); Ralph MacDonald (percussion)

Electro Deluxe – Live In Paris

null

Electro Deluxe A wolf in sheeps clothing. Six of the most sought-after musicians on the french musical scene. Since 2001, we have evolved from our early electro-jazz sound to a energetic cocktail of dirty soul & funk with a touch of class. After ten years of criss-crossing the globe (China, India, Canada, Mexico, Europe) and performing at some of the most prestigious festivals (Montréal Jazz Festival, Jazz à Vienne, Cervantino, Solidays), we celebrate our tenth anniversary with the release of the double album “Live in Paris” recorded with the full artillery of our Big Band.

A reservoir of musical talent, and inspired by the mythical “Funk Brothers” of Motown lore, we work as studio musicians for among others, Universal & Motown recording artists, Ben Oncle Soul and Hocus Pocus, who have equally participated on our records. At the heart of the groove scene and with the ability to cross-over into other genres, we have enjoyed modest success in our home country of France with each of our last 2 albums topping the jazz charts in France while performing entirely in English. More Deluxe than Electro, and not bound to any one musical reference, we continue to push the boundries of our music.

Jackie McLean – Capuchin Swing

null

Saxman Jackie McLean’s explorations of free jazz and the avant-garde were still a couple of years away when he cut this Blue Note album in 1960, but that doesn’t mean Capuchin Swing is a by-the-numbers affair by any means. Though its name isn’t generally invoked when the tally of hard bop’s greatest albums is made, it stands up alongside anything Freddie Hubbard, Hank Mobley, et al were doing at the time. With trumpeter Blue Mitchell proving to be a perfectly matched sparring partner, McLean pushes bop harmonies and structures nearly to the breaking point with his intense improvisations on a batch of original compositions with a couple of outside tunes thrown in. Throughout, McLean stirs the sonic pot in such a fiery fashion, you can just tell something’s cooking that he hasn’t quite served up yet. (cduniverse)

Jimmy Smith – Midnight Special

null

The name Jimmy Smith is practically synonymous with jazz organ, and albums such as Midnight Special are part of the reason. Of course, there is Smith’s legendary gospel- and blues-rooted style and brilliant bebop chops, present on Midnight Special in ample doses. Also, one could not ask for a better band: Donald Bailey, one of Smith’s regular drummers; Kenny Burrell on guitar; and Stanley Turrentine on tenor sax. As great as Smith is, it’s Turrentine’s lusciously rich tenor tone and big bluesy honks that makes Midnight Special such a true joy. (Burrell’s burr, elegant guitar isn’t too shabby either.) In the end, this album is simply a party waiting to happen, for fans of Smith and soul-jazz alike.

Ravi Coltrane – Spirit Fiction

null

Praised for his music s elusive beauty (DownBeat), and for his style informed by tradition but not encumberedby it (Philadelphia City Paper), saxophonist and composer Ravi Coltrane takes a bold step in his creative journey with Spirit Fiction, his Blue Note Records debut . The 11-track album features two different band lineups, each with a unique expressive urgency. Several tracks feature Coltrane s long-term quartet with pianist Luis Perdomo, bassist Drew Gress and drummer E.J. Strickland. Coltrane also enlisted a quintet featuring trumpeter Ralph Alessi, pianist Geri Allen, bassist James Genus and drummer Eric Harland the personnel featured on his sophomore release From the Round Box. According to Coltrane, The title, Spirit Fiction is an abstract turn of phrase that came out of a stream of consciousness. The phrase seemed to mesh with the layered, superimposed nature of the title track. It also felt like a gentle indicator of the science involved in recording that track. In some ways, it ultimately refers to the open ended idea of simply embracing imagination. Coltrane s label mate and fellow saxophonist Joe Lovano served as co-producer of the album along with Coltrane. Lovano also plays alongside Coltrane and Allen on Paul Motian s Fantasm and joins the quintet for an explosive version of Ornette Coleman s Check Out Time. Spirit Fiction also includes six original compositions by Coltrane and three by Alessi.

Evil Needle – Homeworks EP

null

Evil Needle is a name that has been resonating greatly in the universe of beatmakers. Born in 84’ in the city of Berlin, Germany, he grew up fully influenced by 90’s hip hop with the sounds of Wu-Tang in particular were the soundtrack to his childhood. From then on, mainstream music was far from his radar, and he has been honing his skills for a good decade ever since his first introduction into the world of beat-making. ‘Cirrostratus’ (2011) was the beat tape that really caught our attention, as his attention to sounds and textures and a seemingly effortless ability to craft luscious tracks with minimal elements signalled to us that this talent is truly in his own class. Needless to say, we couldn’t say no when he was looking for a label to release his 2010 Homework beat tape and here we are – 8 tracks of pure Evil Needle to take you through the day.

Horace Silver – Horace Silver And The Jazz Messengers

null

In 1954, pianist Horace Silver teamed with drummer Art Blakey to form a cooperative ensemble that would combine the dexterity and power of bebop with the mid-tempo, down-home grooves of blues and gospel music. The results are what would become known as hard bop, and the Jazz Messengers were one of the leading exponents of this significant era in jazz history. Before Silver’s departure and Blakey’s lifetime of leadership, this first major session by the original Jazz Messengers set the standard by which future incarnations of the group would be measured.

The tunes here are all Silver’s, save the bopping “Hankerin’” by tenor man Hank Mobley. Such cuts as the opening “Room 608,” the bluesy “Creepin’ In,” and “Hippy” are excellent examples of both Silver’s creative composing style and the Messengers’ signature sound. Of course, the most remembered tunes from the session are the classic “The Preacher” and “Doodlin’,” two quintessential hard bop standards. In all, this set is not only a stunning snapshot of one of the first groups of its kind but the very definition of a style that dominated jazz in the ’50s and ’60s and enjoyed a resurgence in the ’80s. Pharoah Sanders – Jewels Of Thought

null

No one navigates a stormy sea and subsequent repose quite like avant garde pilot Pharoah Sanders. We are invited here to join the personnel in transcendental affirmations of peace, reassured by the yodeling of Leon Thomas and happy, revelatory piano work of the one and only Lonnie Liston Smith. Chimes, African thumb piano, and the talking hourglass drum are just some of the other elements which make this album musically and culturally compelling. The compositional minimalism of Jewels Of Thought is a major thread through Sanders albums of this period, setting up a sparse canvas for colorful tenor saxophone meditations. In one instance Sanders’ playing may be soft, beckoning and glad, while elsewhere his saxophone becomes a crazed, outraged beast unleashing its fury on the world. Regardless of which way these compositions lead, listeners are made to feel more like sonic travelers than mere consumers. (cduniverse)

Personnel: Pharoah Sanders (tenor saxophone, contrabass clarinet, reed flute, African thumb piano, orchestra chimes, percussion); Leon Thomas (vocals, percussion); Lonnie Liston Smith (piano, African flute, African thumb piano, percussion); Cecil McBee, Richard Davis (bass, percussion); Idris Muhammad (drums, percussion); Roy Haynes (drums).

Joe Lovano – Bird Songs

null

“I didn’t approach this as a tribute record,” states Joe Lovano, dispelling right off the bat any preconception that his new album Bird Songs—an exploration of the Charlie Parker songbook—is a mere retread. Lovano’s 22nd album for Blue Note Records (the release of which will mark his 20th year on the label) breaks the mold of Bird tribute records. Bird Songs is a thrillingly adventurous, thoroughly modern, and uniquely personal look at one of the most influential figures in jazz history by one of the most important voices in the music today.

D’Angelo Albums!

Does he need a presentation?

Michael Eugene Archer (born February 11, 1974), better known by his stage name D’Angelo, is an American R&B and neo soul singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and record producer. He is known for his production and songwriting talents as much as for his vocal abilities, and often draws comparisons to his influences, Marvin Gaye, and Prince. D’Angelo was one of the most influential artists during the rise of the neo-soul movement.
