Benny Carter – Jazz Giant

null

A high-profile musician, arranger, and bandleader since the 1920s, Benny Carter was still in full command of his powers in the 1950s, as JAZZ GIANT attests. There are healthy doses of ’50s bop on the seven cuts here, but anchoring it all is the classic swing for which Carter is best known. Equally impressive are Carter’s sidemen, which include saxophonist Ben Webster, guitarist Barney Kessel, and drummer Shelly Manne, among other luminaries. Top notch performances all around make this a gem that will satisfy fans of old-school jazz and ’50s bop alike.

Recorded in Los Angeles, California on June 11, July 22, October 7, 1957 and April 21, 1958.

Personnel: Benny Carter (alto saxophone, trumpet); Ben Webster (saxophone); Frank Rosolino (trombone); Andre Previn, Jimmy Rowles (piano); Leroy Vinnegar (bass); Shelly Manne (drums).

Nathan Davis – If

null

The album ‘If’ was released on Nathan Davis’s tiny bespoke Tomorrow International record label in 1976 and only 1000 copies were ever pressed. Davis leads his super-funky group along the narrow path between jazz and funk that so many failed to navigate successfully in the second-half of the 1970s. It’s an album by an artist who is a musician’s musician. More importantly – it’s a killer! Nathan Davis’s career has made him a connoisseur’s favourite and his records are all extremely collectable. In the 1960s Davis was drafted into the US army, and was based in Germany and France (working with everyone from Art Blakey to Donald Byrd and Ray Charles). Davis also worked as musical director of a TV and radio station, wrote film scores, studied anthropology at the Sorbonne and released a number of important records. He returned to the US at the end of the 60s and continued to release a number of amazing jazz records – all of which have now been long out of print. His avoidance of the major record industry, working instead with various small independent labels with limited distribution has made all his releases very collectible. But have no doubt; Davis is one of the most important jazz artists of his time with a 50-year career span that continues to this day. The early Tomorrow International releases, especially ‘If’ have become serious collector’s items, as indeed have most of Nathan Davis’s catalogue of recordings. Today, more people want these records than when they were first made and demand outstrips supply. Those who own Nathan Davis albums don’t sell them – and none more so than ‘If’.

Franco Tonani – Night in Fonorama

null

Night in Fonorama. And it was a night in the real meaning of the word, that the five jazzmen spent at the Fonorama, one of the most important studios in Milano. It was the night of May the 31st 1964. They met at nine o’ clock in the evening, and they saw the day-break on a working Milano while they still were trying to perfectionate the last tune. We said they met¯: and no word is more significative to indicate the meeting of the five musicians at the studio. There was nothing decided before: neither the pieces to be recorded, nor even the least idea of arrangement. They met and decided the pieces to record.

Brian Bennett – Voyage (A Journey Into Discoid Funk)

null

A voyage from Brian Bennett – indeed a trip into disco and funk inspired rhythms, as the subtitle lets us know, but also plenty synthy rock, jazz and proggy elements – a Voyage worth taking from the sound library genius Bennett! The synths and keyboards by Francis Monkman is the secret weapon on this effort for sure – percussionist/producer/arranger Bennett is the guiding force, but the sound of those keys and synths are the neon bright leading light, while Bennett’s percussion and Alan Jone’s bass bring a nice funky bottom end. Titles include “Voyage”, “Solstice”, “Chain Reaction”, “Pendulum Force”, “Air Quake” and “Ocean Glide”.

Kan Kick – Beautiful Opus Of Love Deeper Than Flesh

null

Kankick is a hip-hop producer from Oxnard, CA. He was once a member of Lootpack, but has gone on to work with Declaime, Tha Alkaholiks, and DJ Babu, among others. His first album is entitled From Artz Unknown and was released in 2001.  “Beautiful: Opus of Love Deeper Than Flesh” continues Kankick’s tradition of low-key loops and fuzzed-out jazziness. “Thursdays at the Good Life” rocks a lounge piano and background bells, “Black Women Candle Wax” uses a little static to augment the simple synth melody, and a river of bubbling crowd noise percolates under the mellow loop that powers “Continued Togetherness.” Piano figures heavy on “Beautiful,” and some of Kankick’s best work throughout the disc’s 58 minutes is anchored on lilting, mid-range keywork (“NightTime Beauty,” “Serenade the Outdoor Visitors,” and what kind of sounds like an electric piano played in reverse on “OX Coming at Ya”). If you’re looking to get your party started, “Opus of Love Deeper Than Flesh” might not be quite the right vehicle. But once the party’s winding down, and you and your people are just settling in during the late night hours, it’s the perfect accompaniment for slowly nodding your head and drifting into a daze on the couch.
