Madlib Medicine Show #7: High Jazz

MADLIB MEDICINE SHOW #7: HIGH JAZZ

Pre-order for 3LP and CD.  Expected release date: July 27.

Madlib Medicine Show #7: High Jazz is an all-new Madlib jazz production. High Jazz, the name itself a tribute to the landmark jazz-fusion album released by Stanton Davis’s Ghetto Mysticism in 1976, shows a marked development in Madlib’s craft.

Since the introduction of Madlib’s Yesterdays New Quintet releases nearly a decade ago, the producer’s core group of musicians and collaborators (known collectively as “Yesterdays Universe”) has grown by the dozens.  The notoriously elusive, publicity-shy and anti-commercial ethic of the group has kept many of the recordings from every being released, while others have been pressed anonymously, kept within the group or distributed only among private collectors.

Among the newly released tracks on High Jazz are a Madlib, Karriem Riggins & James Poyser collaboration, the debut of groups Generation Match, The Big Black Foot Band, RMC, and a 15-minute live piece by Yesterdays New Quintet (recorded at a secret show in 2000).  The 15-track album runs a total of 61 minutes.

Limited edition 3-disc vinyl:  Madlib has collected an additional 30 minutes of music for the limited edition vinyl release of High Jazz.  These tracks are not available on the CD or digital release.  Album covers will be hand screened by Hit+Run with a design by Jeff Jank, and individually numbered. See photos below.

MRR-ADM Featuring Malcolm Catto – Untitled

null

This record is simple to describe: it’s all about rhythm. Drums to be exact. Heavy, syncopated, driving. Followed by the bass. Percussive, insistent. Perhaps some guitar. Biting, raspy. Analog synth sounds? Absolutely. As long as they’re dark. If those descriptions sound similar to those that you might find on the back of those production library LPs from the likes of KPM, Dewolfe, Southern, Peer or other imprints whose sole purpose was to supply talented musicians with a blank disc which they could theninscribe with sounds of their liking, well, congrats to you. You’ve touched on MRR-ADM’s mantra. No contrived, commercial formulas needed. Just a theme, built upon for a number of tracks pressed onto wax and sold to radio stations, film and television editors and ad agencies across the world. That’s really what you’re holding in your hand – a music library album. Done for the modern day arbiter of taste, of course. But, this time made available – in limited quantities, however – to the record buying public. MRR-ADM are a production team from Southern California. At one point in the past, they were known as MHE (see their forthcoming release on Sound in Color). On this record, they worked with Malcolm Catto (leader of The Heliocentrics on Now-Again Records) and Mike Burnham (Tardis Studios, UK and Australia) along with some other supremely musical compatriots. This limited edition (less than 1,000 pieces manufactured) 10″ vinyl is a privately pressed record. Catchy titles are not MRR-ADM’s strong suit. You’ll notice that there aren’t any song titles on this album. Actually, there aren’t any words on this package. MRR-ADM are concerned with stark, dark minimalism, whether in their design or in their sound. These six songs – complex in their seeming simplicity – are their favorites from the first round of recordings that they made over the past five years. But they are only an introduction. There is much more to come.

Sergio Fanni Quintet – Hard Suite

null

An excellent bit of soulful post-Coltrane jazz! The group is a sextet led by Italian trumpeter Sergio Fanni — and it features piano and electric piano by Sante Palumbo, plus tenor, drums, electric bass, and percussion. In a way, the album reminds us a lot of early 70s work by American groups like The Bridgewater Brothers or The Visitors — in that it’s got a free style of blowing on some of the introductions and introspective moments, but slams into a hard modal groove for the bulk of the tracks. Fanni’s solo work is especially great, and is filled with the soulful searching of players like Benny Bailey or Cecil Bridgewater, a style that sounds particularly nice over the album’s long piano lines. Titles include “Shade”, “Plan”, “Drive Waltz”, and “Dawn/Suffer”.

Piero Umiliani – La Ragazza Fuori Strada

null

One of the coolest Italian soundtracks we’ve heard in a long time — a wonderful set of tunes that moves from slinky, to easy, to groovy, and beyond! The tunes start out bubbling very spare and slow — with floating piano, moog, and other nice bits — and as the record progresses, the sound gets heavier, with some nice funky elements thrown into the mix! The whole thing’s a brilliant exercise in understatement — not only one of the best soundtracks by Umiliani from the 70s, but also a perfect example of why we dig Italian soundtracks so much! Titles include “Volto Di Donna”, “La Prima Uscita”, “La Rinuncia”, “Senza Tregua”, “Nostalgia”, “The Party”, and “Maryam”.

Gianni Basso & Renato Sellani – Body and Soul

null

From Italy, arguably the country with most exciting jazz scene today, comes a superb duo album of two veteran musicians: the “Italian Balladeur” Gianni Basso on tenor saxophone and 81-years-old Renato Sellani on piano. These amazing musicians have created, lived and embody the history of Italian jazz. Basso has a strong, fat tone and melodic, expressive style. His saxophone playing is gentle and passionate, light and deep, and always rhythmic. Sellani proves to be a perfect match for Basso, showing his beautiful touch and sophisticated sense of harmony in sometimes unexpected ways. This is a beautiful conversation between two masters, and a collection of gorgeously played standards and ballads. Recommended!

Very solid Italian soundtrack for a police movie. Excellent funky theme that is reprised throughout the record, a bit like his British ‘cousin’, “The Hanged Man”. Dark slow or medium grooves with very efficient breaks on “Caccia al cinese”, “Dark Suspense” and “Affano”.

Eero Koivistoinen Music Society – Wahoo!

null

Funky funky Finland! Don’t be put off by the long name, or the overuse of vowels in the title — because this album’s a killer batch of funky jazz, filled with loads of choppy sax riffs, sweet Fender Rhodes licks, and plenty of heavy drums. The record’s got a hard fusion groove — and all the tracks are long instrumentals served up with plenty of power, and plenty of ferocity! The set was recorded in Finland in 1972, but it feels more like some killer studio jam from the west coast — played by by a very tight bunch of funky jazz musicians who weren’t afraid to go over the top. Titles include “Hot C”, “7 Up”, “6 Down”, “Suite 19″, and “Wahoo!”

Alien Army – The End

null

Alien Army was a group formed by 11 italian DJ (Skizo, Zak, Tayone, Inesha, John Type 10, Metz, Gruff, Stile, Double S, Stanley, Popsta).
The concept of the group was to add different styles, combined with original thoughts, unified under one roof, in the hands of the most prepared and talented turntablists in Italy. Creativity is at the base of the group. Consistant training, competivness and musical backgrounds form an untouchable alliance for the future of worldwide turntablizm. Alien Army is an orchestral sextet based on turntables, mixers and effects units. The intent is to develop the concept of turntablizm in its purest form to bombard untried and unvisited realms on the five percent hip hop culture putting Italy first place in the worldwide turntable culture.

The Clonious – Between The Dots

null

Heavyweight beat generation cosmic hip hop n’jazz featuring Dudley Perkins and Georgia Anne Muldrow, Muhsinah, Dorian Concept and many more. Somewhere between the past and the distant future, sparked by dusty old jazz records and beat generation hip hop, at the audio cross-roads of Detroit and Vienna, are the sound stories that have been steeping in the head of 23 year old beat navigator Paul Movahedi, also known as The Clonious. His outerworldly, astral jazz riffs burst out between booming beats and shoe-gazer future-funk to give the pulse of his electronic sounds a unique organic edge.

North West Metropolis – Expressions EP

null

No more digging in the crates necessary! The well-recieved Expressions EP by North West Metropolis is finally available on CD as well. This first release of North West Metropolis, a collective of producers Perquisite, Omar Rey and Ane features the mc’s Cee Major, Pete Philly and Kain Slim, singer Delicate Swing and saxophonist Bart Sur. Innovating Hip Hop is the keyword over here. Cee Major (the Proov), Pete Philly (ex-Nicotine) and Kain Slim take things up to another level over the sometimes slumbering minimalistic and then again innovating sound of the North West Metropolis beats. The cd release is supported by a video of ‘Self-Reflection’ which features Pete Philly.

Jyoti – Ocotea

null

Georgia Anne Muldrow’s next project is unlike anything she’s ever released. Georgia Anne Muldrow’s jazz persona is named is Jyoti – a Sanscrit word meaning “light”- and it is the name given to her from “the great and masterful ancestor” Alice Coltrane who was a family friend. Her first record composed as Jyoti is entitled “Ocotea“- the name of an aromatic wood that her mother had recently given her, and she told me that burning this wood is what sparked the inspiration for creating the “free-jazz” sound of the album. Entirely instrumental, the 9 track experience draws from an ocean of influences such as Hendrix’s Band of Gypsys, Swamini Truiyasangitanada’s Monastic Trio, Charlie Mingus, Eric Dolphy, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Henry Threadgill, Sun Ra, and Stevie Wonder – to whom she dedicates a track “Stevelander”. Ocotea is a new frontier for Georgia Anne Muldrow’s sonic discoveries. “Infused with experimental synthesizers that posses a pan-tonal sensibility, and melodies that soar about with raw musicianship!”

RJD2 – Inversions Of The Colossus

null

Following upon the success of “The Colossus”, RJD2 returns with “Inversions of the Colossus”, a companion piece of its own unique nature. The “instrumental” album is a time honored tradition in hip hop that RJD2 has taken advantage of whenever possible – without an instrumental version of “Magnificent City”, there would be no Mad Men theme! However, “Inversions” is a new twist on the idea: in essence, all 7 of the vocal songs on “The Colossus” appear here sans vocals. The remainder of the album is made up of 7 new songs – 14 tracks in all! Ranging from banging dancefloor funk to extreme psychedelia, it follows a similar “no format” approach as “The Colossus” did. Yet another solid collection of classic RJD2.

14KT – Nowalataz

null

Here it is… a project I unofficially had done since 2006. It started when James Yancey a.k.a. J Dilla passed that February. To cope with the death of my favorite producer, who I liked to call my unofficial “musical mentor,” I started making ‘donuts’ …uncontrollably. I never planned to release any of the material out of respect for Dilla & his craft. I’ve shared some of the music with others, in which they would repeatedly ask me to hear it, so I decided to put a little something together and make it official. JUST FOR YA’LL.

This is a collection of beats created about 3 years ago. Some ‘donuts’ style, some just around that era of 14KT beats. “Now & Laters” were always a favorite candy of mine. I used to go to Mindell’s Pharmacy in Ypsilanti back in the day and buy ALL of them. Sadly, I even stole change from my grandma’s (RIP) purse for them. They are addictive, yet fun to eat… something I found mutual when making music at the time. Ironically, I fell back in love with “Nowalataz” around this era (ask my homey Sarah “Merk Merk,” haha). Enjoy.
