Aardvark – Love Music

null

An audiotastic omnivore with a sticky tongue for extracting from endless mounds, Aardvark’s Love Music forages a nocturnal haze into an electrifying dubbed, soul filled, funk, hip hop and electronic adventure. Amsterdam’s legendary Rednose Distrik member Mike Kivits, AKA Aardvark, breaks off a rolling soundscape; one long enough to give familiarity to his musical taste and party to subterranean frequencies. Boasting a global buffet, this mix breaks dawn before sunrise. Come along for a little snack!

Samiyam Albums!

Sam Baker, alias Samiyam, is an instrumental Hip-Hop producer from Ann Arbor, Michigan. He is best known for his work with experimental producer, Flying Lotus, and his 8-bit Video Game inspired Hip-Hop beats. Ann Arbor’s latest prodigal son and lover of sprinkles on doughnuts, takes the legacy of all Detroit’s talented musical sons and daughters and makes Hip Hop beats filled with snippets of Soul, Funk, 70’s Italian horror flick soundtracks, Nintendo bonus level music, and 90’s Hip Hop. Somehow, with this much content, the beats still manage to sound gloriously minimal and disjointed. Fans like Benji B, Andrew Meza and XLR8R have been eagerly snapping up his tracks, as Sam freeze frames Electro energy and spits it back out as twisted future Jazz. Dabrye is a fan, Daedelus describes him as “a thrilling sound to break the sameness,” and Flying Lotus is his brother in arms (they collaborate on the project FLYamSAM).

Pursuit Grooves – Fox Trot Mannerisms

null

Hyper-healthy astro-hiphop grooves from Brooklyn’s Pursuit Grooves landing quite unexpectedly on Tectonic. It’s a brave departure for a label that’s solely associated with dubstep but one that pays off in incredible style with seven tracks of unheard styles akin to Pattie Blingh plugging into Fly Lo’s Sendai and setting her vectors for Sun Ra’s space temple in sector 17. Her lyrics commendably deal with conscious issues but to be honest we’re pretty distracted by her intuitively spiraling space grooves to give them our full attention. From the stooped hiphop swing of ‘Pressure’ to the decaying astro-step rhythms and slivers of Moog on ‘Mr Softee’ through to the ultra-modern disco of ‘Shabaps’ or the lucid juke-boogie dreams of ‘Whisper’ Vanese Smith is giving us the future on a plate and we’re hungry as f*ck. ‘Fox Trot Mannerisms’ is quite a stunning collection that should take a few minutes to settle in, but a few months to really get a grip on. Recommended to fans of owt from Toro Y Moi to Ras G and back again – very very good indeed.

Take – Only Mountain

null

Alpha Pup is proud to present Only Mountain, the newest release from L.A.-based beat producer Take. His most powerful and fully realized work to date, Only Mountain serves as a complete affirmation of Take’s ten prolific years in music production. Although prominently featured on seminal releases such as From L.A. With Love and this year’s All City 10-inch, Take is poised to make the greatest impact of his career with his newest sonic creation.

From Only Mountain‘s opening salvo, “Before You Think,” it is clear that Take has claimed his rightful place amongst the beat scene’s leading luminaries. A dusty off-kilter space stomp, the track lays the ground work for an album’s worth of hazy electronic textures and intergalactic breakbeats. Case in point: “Incredibright,” a no-holds-barred haymaker of astro-hop swagger. On “Implosions,” one of the albums more introspective tracks, Take drags us through a spaced out journey of low-end stabs and bit-crushed melodies.

A dense and groundbreaking work, Take’s Only Mountain stands as a staggering collection of gorgeously brilliant melodies and deep subharmonic bass. Truly future music towards a brighter end.

Ras G – El-Alylien Part 1

null

Ras returns from planet X with a six track EP of abstract dub-hop head pressure. With ‘El Alyien Part 1′ it soon becomes obvious that we’ve caught Ras at his most esoteric. The first four tracks are a bong-eyed blend of rich field recordings and crackly samples knitted togther with a bed of psychoactively charged subbass. There’s almost no telling where each track starts and stops if you weren’t looking at the screen, lending an intuitive and expressionist collage feel to the set. GB’s remix brings up the rear with a spherical rerub of the second track, sounding a little like the Delia Derbyshire just smoked a blunt with Dilla. Recommended!

M64 (Ragen Fykes + Ohmega Watts) – Rhythm Of The Drum

null

M64 is the collaboration of vocalist, Ragen Fykes &  emcee/producer Ohmega Watts.

“The M64 Collabo is when Ohmega and I link together and we make music. It stands for Messar 64. It’s also known as the Black Eye galaxy.” Messar 64 was created when two other galaxies collided in space, causing the smaller, inner galaxy to spin clockwise. The gases from this galaxy in turn, make the larger, outer galaxy rotate counter-clockwise. Fykes discovered Messar 64 while at work one day, researching, “things that were spacey.” Watts liked the sound of the shortened version and the two of them agreed that the name represented their creative collaborative efforts.

Tiziana Ghiglioni – Yet Time

null

This is what you get when a vocalist is allowed to lead a quintet full of Italy’s brightest young jazz Turks: tremendous beauty and vision. With Ottaviano’s soprano sax and Battaglia’s piano keeping her company on the front line, Tiziana Ghiglioni can’t help but shine on this stellar material, two tunes for which she wrote the lyrics — in English no less. Far from being entirely ballads, the set is pretty much in medium tempo, very dreamy, and full of elegant pianism from Battaglia and the most lyrically challenging solos Ottaviano has ever played. The instrumentalists walk a fine line here between Ghiglioni’s clear, ringing voice and the desire to play out the fantasies inspired by her voice, without overpowering it. The tension all comes to a head near the end of the album, on Ornette Coleman’s glorious “Round Trip,” Kurt Weill’s “September Song,” and the Milton Nascimento number “Empty Faces.” In each of these, the band sets out a strident harmonic map for Ghiglioni to follow and she pushes her voice acrobatically to comply. The tunes work, but they don’t feel as effortless as the organic matter, such as “…And Yet Not You Alone,” at the beginning of the record, composed by Battaglia specifically for Ghiglioni. But it’s a tiny complaint; she proves herself every bit the instrumentalist her more celebrated colleagues are and, by the end of the disc, her name and voice will be etched into your memory in perpetuity.

Pharoah Sanders – Thembi

null

Brimming with innovation, positivity and a pervasive sense of wonder, THEMBI may become your favorite Sanders album. These tracks represent a landmark confluence of many elements: Avant-Garde chaos, static harmony and a cultural revaluation of West African instrumentation, to name a few. Omnipresent, of course, is the unmistakable tempest of Pharoah blowing his tenor out to sea. It’s 1971, and this is a simultaneous celebration of the past and future of jazz set to the jingling bells of a Sunday afternoon be-in. THEMBI floats to a start with the ethereal Fender Rhodes musing of “Astral Traveling,” courtesy of Lonnie Liston Smith. Though Sanders has described the melody as an impromptu thread for the changes, his plaintive long tones are as charged as ever with wisdom. In the lower register is Cecil McBee, laying down the groove with entrancing vamp lines. The title track seems like an afterthought to the classic “The Creator,” replacing the traditional “head, solo, head” structure with something more closely resembling “mantra, solo, mantra.” Like much of Sanders’ other work, these recordings are simple in form, yet vast in content.

Manzel – Midnight Theme

null

A very, very obscure instrumental funk group from the mid-’70s, Manzel would find much fame decades later once numerous hip-hop producers sampled the drum intro from “Midnight Theme” and, in turn, sent breakbeat collectors scurrying for copies of the original record. During their heyday, Manzel didn’t amount to anything more than a pair of 45 rpm singles for the independent Fraternity Records. It was only later, during the ’90s, that the group attained notoriety. The drum intro from “Midnight Theme” — the A-side of the second of the group’s two 45s — was sampled numerous times, and quite famously at that: most gloriously by Prince Paul (on De La Soul’s “Plug Tunin’,” from the trio’s classic 3 Feet High and Rising album), and later by DJ Muggs (on Cypress Hill’s breakthrough single, “How I Could Just Kill a Man”) and RZA (on Ghostface Killah’s debut single, “Winter Warz”). These are just three instances, though. You can also hear Manzel sampled on recordings by Eric B & Rakim and Ultramagnetic MC’s among other, less well-known instances. Such famous and widespread sampling made Manzel so renowned among beat heads that Kenny Dope (of Masters at Work) and the Undercover Brother (born Victor Piagneri) dug up the original recordings, remastered and remixed them, and reissued them via Dopebrother Records in 2004.
